Where can my Teenager get a job in New Jersey?

Posted on: April 2nd, 2020 by

If your teen is anything like my older teenager, they are starting to wonder what they can do to make money. They want to be able to go out with friends (when it’s okay to do so again) and they want to be able to buy their own video games, hydro flasks, and other stuff. But doing so requires that your teenager needs money. Their need for money is continuing to grow while your budget might not be.

Your teenager maybe not be able to go out and interview for a job right now but he/she can still start looking for a job.

Where can my teenager get a job in New Jersey?

If it’s been on your mind or theirs we’re here to help. I can remember having my first job at 13 or 14 years old. As a teenager, I had a newspaper route, shampooed hair at a salon, and worked retail in a number of different shops. Many jobs that existed for teenagers then no longer exist today or they have different age requirements.

I realize that when our teenagers hit 18 years old they can pretty much get a job anywhere. The challenge is when they are 14, 15, or 16 years old. Where can they get a job? How can they get to work if they don’t drive?

We’ve tried to address both the questions in this blog post. We start with introducing ways to get to a job that don’t rely on mom and dad doing the driving. When you start to think about it, there really are a lot of options.

Then we talk about jobs for teenagers in New Jersey. Not just summer jobs for teenagers but also jobs that are available all year round. Many of these jobs have online job sites where teens can learn more about the job and also apply online.

6 Ways teens can get to a job when they don’t have a car

Teens DO NOT need a car to work in New Jersey. All of these options are available for teens.

  • Walk
  • Bike
  • Carpool
  • Uber
  • Take public transportation. Many offer a discount for students.
    • New Jersey Transit can provide ways for teens to work in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York City.
    • New Jersey has six Amtrak stations and connections to many Amtrak routes. Most of the long-distance trains stop at Newark Penn Station and Trenton, and the Keystone route provides additional service to other cities. Daily commuters or occasional riders who transfer between SEPTA and New Jersey Transit at the Trenton Transit Center can purchase one-way tickets, round trip tickets, or monthly interagency passes. It serves all points around the State of New Jersey from Market Street in Philadelphia, 30th Street Station and Trenton Transit Center.
    • Patco provides train service across South Jersey and into Philadelphia.
    • Riverline can transport teens between Camden and Trenton.
      • The River Line rail system is in southern New Jersey connects the cities of Camden and Trenton, New Jersey’s capital. It stops at the PATCO Speedline’s Broadway station and the NJ Transit Atlantic City Line’s Pennsauken Transit Center, allowing passengers to transfer to and from these connections to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
    • The PATH is an option for teens that need to travel between North Jersey and New York City to get to work.
        • PATH functions similarly to Patco, but it services the New Jersey suburbs of NYC with a couple of lines to the World Trade Center, Grand Central Station, and 33rd Street in Chelsea. Trains run roughly every 10 minutes all day and night. They accept the NYC Metro card which makes traveling between North Jersey and NYC seamless. An added bonus with taking PATH is that you can avoid Penn Station. Learn more about the PATH.
  • Take local shuttles and ferries
    • LBI -Tuckerton Water Ferry
      • The Tuckerton Seaport has a ferry service available for teenagers to use to get to jobs on LBI! • Liberty Landing Ferry is an option for teens to get to jobs in Jersey City or Lower Manhattan.
      • Liberty Landing Ferry runs from Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City to Warren Street in Jersey City and then right to the World Financial Center Terminal in lower Manhattan. The service operates 6 am-8:45 pm weekdays and 9 am-7:45 pm weekends with boats every 30 minutes. The total route takes only 15 minutes. Bikes are allowed on the ferry for no additional charge. • The Jitney serves Atlantic City and Cape May
      • Atlantic City features Jitney, a public bus transportation system. They offer day passes so you can ride and get off and back on at your leisure, or you can purchase single-trip tickets. Buses run every few minutes 24 hours a day. View the Atlantic City Jitney route.
      • Jitney also services Cape May where you can ride across town for free. Service is only during the peak season of late June through early September from 11:00 am until 11:00 pm each day. View more information about the Cape May Jitneys.
    • Tram cars in Wildwood
      • Wildwood has an old-school tram service where you can experience all the sights in the historic, open-sided tram car. Service runs during peak season from 11:00 am until the amusement piers close. Fares are $3.50 per trip or $7.00 for a day pass. Learn more about the Wildwood tram cars.
    • Seastreak Ferry
      • The Seastreak Ferry runs from Manhattan to Sandy Hook National Park in Highlands New Jersey. From the ferry port in the national park, shuttles are available to different beaches. Seasonal ferries operate several times a day. Learn more about the Seastreak Ferry.
    • Cape May – Lewes Ferry
      • The Cape May – Lewes Ferry transports passengers to and from Cape May, NJ and Lewes, Delaware. Off-season round-trip tickets are $14, and you can ferry your personal vehicle for another $38 round-trip. Bikes are allowed on the ferry as well. The trip takes about one and a half hours each way. The ferry departs from each location four times daily during the off-season. Learn more about the Cape May – Lewes Ferry

There are sure to be more ways to get to work than what we thought of. Let us know if we missed any.

In the meantime, special thanks to Brooke from the Tuckerton Seaport, Josh from Nicholas & Lence Communications, Sara from 360 Quote, and Jennifer from Etia for helping us put together public transportation options for teens looking to get to work, but don’t have a car.
