Colonial Park Playground in Somerset New Jersey is PHENOMENAL!! There is so much to do and see here that I’m not sure you will be able to fully appreciate it with just our pictures and video, but I am going to try and help you. I took a ton of photos during my June 2022 visit. Everywhere I turned there was something else fabulous to photograph.
This is one of those playgrounds that is definitely worth driving across New Jersey for and I am so glad I did. When I tell you this playground has something for everyone I mean it. This is a fully accessible playground. It’s clear that the designers and planners really set out to create a playground that could be inclusive to children from the area and visiting guests.

Where is Colonial Park Playground located?
Colonial Park is located at 156 Mettlers Road in Somerset in Somerset County, New Jersey. The park is part of the Somerset County Parks System.

What kind of playground equipment does the Colonial Park Playground have?
There are multiple playground structures. Playground equipment for toddlers, little kids, big kids, and dare I say tweens and even younger teens. There are swings, but no big kid slides. What the playgrounds may lack in slides it more than makes up with all the other unique playground equipment.

Are there swings?
There are two swing structures. One swing structure has two accessible swings and four traditional swings. The other swing structure has four baby swings and two accessible swings.

Are there slides?
There are two straight open slides.

What special features does the playground offer?
There are so many unique features to enjoy at the playgrounds at Colonial Park.

What kind of ground cover does the playground have?
The ground surface is a flat rubber padding in teal and black colors.

Is the playground at Colonial Park Playground accessible?
Oh my gosh, I can emphatically say yes! The ground was smooth and flat. There are 4 accessible swings. There is a very large wheelchair-accessible cruiser that looked like it could seat at least 8 people.

There were sensory play areas that are accessible to those in wheelchairs and strollers.

There was also what I can only think is some kind of hand bicycle. Roll up or walk up to this and with a hand on each handle start rotating the handles on their wheels.

Is there shade available at the Colonial Park Playground?
There was a picnic pavilion in the playground area that provided shade. There weren’t picnic tables but there were benches.

In between the two largest playground areas are some trees surrounded by stone bricks. They can provide a comfortable spot to watch your children while also being out of the sun.

Where is parking for the Colonial Park Playground?
Colonial Park is a large complex with multiple parking lots. The parking lot closest to the playground is very large with a series of connected parking lots.

Are there restrooms at Colonial Park Playground?
Restrooms are located in a building just a short distance from the playgrounds.

What else is there to do at Colonial Park Playground?
In addition to the playground at Colonial Park, there are additional amenities available for visitors. There are open areas of grass, paddle boats, walking trails, pavilions with picnic tables, 1.4 mile fitness course, ponds for fishing, and a spray park. Learn more at the park website.

Spray Park
The 6,500 square-foot Spray Park on 1.6 acres is a children-only facility with parents permitted to accompany small children. It’s located adjacent to the playground on the end with the climbing webs. Visit the Somerset County Parks website for hours and additional information.

Are there walking trails?
Yes, there are walking trails and nature trails. The park website says, “The Lois Howe Nature Trail is a remnant of the oak, hickory, and beech forests which characterized this area in the past. The main trail and several smaller branch trails lead visitors into areas rich in varied plant and animal life.”

Are there fields or courts for sports?
There are tennis courts and a softball field.
Mini-Golf / Putting Course
Play mini golf at Colonial Park! This course doesn’t have clown faces and large toy structures but kids don’t seem to mind! They can have a blast trying to putt their way around the course.
