Turtle Back Zoo Review – Field Trip Friday

Posted on: November 18th, 2011 by

Is it a park? Is it a zoo?

Step into the Turtle Back Zoo and you might not know you are at a zoo. At first glimpse, it’s a beautiful park. It’s only when you delve deeper that you see the beauty of the animals tucked into their habitats that you realize the Turtle Back Zoo is a zoo.  Their exhibits look like what we might see if we were visiting the animals in their own habitats all while blending into the environment of the Turtle Back Zoo. I loved that about it.

Now, granted when we went last week it was very cold. But that didn’t hamper our fun. Bundled up in our coats and gloves (occasionally taking them off to share details with you on Twitter and Facebook) we enjoyed playing on the playgrounds and visiting the inside and outside Turtle Back Zoo exhibits.

Take a look at what we found at the Turtle Back Zoo.

Turtle Back Zoo Playgrounds

There were at least three playground areas.

The first area had a spider web, animals eggs with a nest, and a treehouse (with slides and tunnels) to climb through.

The second area had animals my boys could climb on and tunnels to crawl through

The last playground-type area was the Prairie Dogs Exhibit, where not only could my boys see the prairie dogs, they could pretend to be one.

Turtle Back Zoo Animal Exhibits

  • American Alligator
  • Australian Exhibit
  • Black Bear
    • Look at how close we were able to get to twin sisters, Jelly and Jam. An added plus, part of the exhibit area to see the Black Bears was inside. You could even view the bears from a couch or give a bear hug to an incredible big teddy bear. (Unfortunately, my boys wouldn’t let me take a picture of them doing it.)
  • Essex Farm
    • Here, we saw ponies, horses, goats, chickens, sheep, and the biggest pig we’ve ever seen.

  • Great Plains
  • Prairie Dogs
  • Reptile Center
    • The indoor Turtle Back Zoo Reptile Center is home to turtles, snakes, and lizards. And look up or you’ll miss the Pteranodon.

  • River Otter
  • South America
  • Wild New Jersey
  • Wolf Woods
  • Penguin Coast
  • In this area, we especially loved seeing how we measured up to certain species of penguins.

  • Southeast Asia
  • Tropical Currents Aquarium

We could talk or write on and on about the Turtle Back Zoo . Instead, check out the rest of the pictures in our Facebook Gallery and then plan a visit for your family.

When you visit the Turtle Back Zoo, come back here and let us know what you think.

In full disclosure, this post was sponsored in part by Turtle Back Zoo who provided us with tickets to visit the Turtle Back Zoo to make our review possible. As always, our opinions are honest and based on our experiences at the Turtle Back Zoo.
