NJ State Theatre Family Day Events in Middlesex County

 

Looking for something to do in Middlesex County on President’s Day, on Monday, February 19? Head to the theater district in downtown New Brunswick for family friendly entertainment and activities. State Theatre Family Day Events will be spread across these New Jersey venues—the State Theatre, Heldrich Hotel, Mason Gross School of the Arts and United Methodist Church, all within close walking distance of the State Theatre.

Free Fun Activities on Livingston Avenue during the NJ State Theatre Family Day

  • ICE SCULPTING DEMONSTRATION 11:15am-12:15pm and 1:45pm-2:45pm FREE
    Watch a master artist turn a block of ice into a gorgeous sculpture…using a chainsaw!
  • NEW BRUNSWICK FIRE DEPARTMENT and NEW BRUNSWICK DARE PROGRAM with COSTUMED CHARACTERS 10am-3pm Outside, kids can sit behind the wheel of a real fire truck or police ATV, and get their pictures taken with Olaf, Elmo, and the Minions!

 

Learn to dance during Family Day Dance Workshops at the Crossroads

4th-Floor Rehearsal Room, 7 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick

Workshops are FREE, and first come, first served. No registration required.

  • “HAND-IN-HAND” 10am-10:45am (ages 3-4; adult needs to participate along with each child)
    Led by Princeton Ballet School
    A first dance class for young children! This workshop will focus on discovering the world of rhythm and dance through gentle exercises—”hand in hand” with parents or caregivers.
  • “YOGA MAD LIBS” 10:30-11:15am |12:30 PM – 1:15 PM
    Led by Garden of Healing Yoga & Wellness Center
    Lots of giggles are in store, as we make up silly sentences using yoga poses instead of words!
  • “FABLES IN PERFORMANCE” 11-11:45am (ages 3-5) | Led by coLAB Arts
    Everybody loves stories. What are some of your favorites? Let’s create one together!
  • “ZUMBINI” 11:30am-12:15pm (ages 0-4; an adult needs to participate along with each child) |
    Led by Garden of Healing Yoga & Wellness Center
    Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers will delight in this gentle workshop, which uses music and movement to build children’s confidence and develop their social, motor, and cognitive skills.
  • “BEGINNING BALLET” 12pm-12:45pm (ages 6-8) | Led by Princeton Ballet School
    This workshop offers young dancers an exciting introduction to the world of ballet.
  • “PENGUIN JOURNEY” 1pm-1:45pm (ages 3-5) | Led by coLAB Arts
    Mr. Popper’s penguins came to England all the way from Antarctica. In this workshop, we’ll become penguins and take a journey home to the South Pole!
  • “KIDS ZUMBA” 1:30-2:15pm (ages 7-11) | Led by Garden of Healing Yoga & Wellness Center
    Come shake it up to the music, rhythms, and beats of Zumba. Jump, dance, shake, and swing your hips as we make fitness fun!
  • “JAZZ/THEATER DANCE” 2pm-2:45pm (ages 9 and up) |  Led by Princeton Ballet School
    This dance workshop invites children to discover the magic of Broadway…and all that jazz!
  • “INTRO TO IMPROV AND THEATER GAMES” 2:30-3:15pm (ages 9 and up) |Led by coLAB Arts Mr. Popper dreams of being an explorer. Using improv and theater games, we’ll set off on an adventure to new lands, including the South Pole

  • Free events at the United Methodist Church, 323 George Street, New Brunswick
    • JOANIE LEEDS 10:45-11:30am and 11:45am-12:30pm FREE
      Kids and adults alike can free their inner rock star with the catchy, upbeat songs of Parents’ Choice Gold Award winner Joanie Leeds. Joanie’s interactive, high-energy performance brings audiences to their feet with songs about everyday things, like sunglasses at the beach, goodnight hugs, and popcorn popping.
    • KB WHIRLY 1-1:45pm and 2-2:45pm FREE KB Whirly is a groovy, get-up-and-dance, one-man band. His music—ranging from R&B and jazz to funk folk, and Broadway—wittily weaves life’s fables and follies into universal songs that will have everybody clapping, singing, laughing, and learning.

    • FACE PAINTING 10am-3:30pm | FREE Show your Family Day spirit by showing off your “cheek art,” courtesy of our talented face painters. (for kids only)
    • CRAFT STATIONS 10am-3:30pm | FREE Stop by our craft stations and make a plastic-spoon penguin puppet or glittery tiara. (for kids only)
    • BALLOON ANIMALS 10am-3:30pm | FREE Watch as our talented “twisters” create colorful balloon shapes for kids to take away.
    • GAMES 10am-3:30pm | $3—Everyone’s a Winner!

 

  • FREE Activities in the State Theatre, 2nd-Floor Lobby, 15 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick
    • COLORING STATION 10am-3:30pm | Take a break at the coloring station, supplied with crayons and coloring pages.
    • PHOTO BOOTH 10am-3pm | Stop by our photo booth, grab some fun props, and take home a memory of your Family Day adventure!

MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS
Mon, February 19, 2018 at 10am, 12:30pm, & 3pm
Direct from a smash-hit New York and London West End season! Painter and decorator by day, Mr. Popper spends his time dreaming of Antarctic adventures. He is astounded when one day a packing crate arrives on his doorstep and a penguin waddles out! With original songs and performing penguin puppets, this delightful, action-packed musical adaptation of Richard and Florence Atwater’s popular book (also made into a Hollywood film starring Jim Carrey) is the perfect family treat for ages 4- 104!
