Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium’s 9 Unique Activities for Kids

This post was made possible by Visit Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium who provided us with tickets during my family’s recent visit. This week, we’ve been telling you about the Pittsburgh family attractions my youngest, 8 years old, and I visited this past July as part of a family blogger tour of Pittsburgh. I admit I was surprised of all there was to do in Pittsburgh for kids and how unique the local attractions are. The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium was no different. There were so many areas that got my youngest excited about the animals, even proclaiming he wished he could be a zookeeper so he could take as good care of the animals as the Pittsburgh Zoo zookeepers do.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium sign

Visit a Zoo & Aquarium in one place. How fabulous is it that with the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium you can see both animals from the wild and the water? Admission is $16 or less and includes visiting both areas as well as free parking.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Operation tiger game

Operate on animals with the classic Operation game with a zoo-inspired twist in the Worlds of Discovery Center. Remember the game Operation? At the Pittsburgh Zoo, there are two Operation games. One game allows you and your child to ‘operate’ on a tiger. The other lets you work on a turtle.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium flamingos

If you miss the Flamingo Walk, you can always see them in their exhibit.

Walk with the flamingos on the Flamingo Walk. Once a day the flamingos are walked through the zoo on a main pathway for everyone to see. Unfortunately, we missed our chance as we were busy exploring other fun areas of the Pittsburgh Zoo, but as we captured in the picture above they do have a regular exhibit at the zoo.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium beach

Build a sand castle on the Pittsburgh Zoo beach in the Islands area. We also love the umbrellas and Adirondack chairs for sitting back and relaxing in.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium playground

Slide down cool slides in the shade at the playground in the Kids’ Kingdom. The playground, set back in the trees, offers areas for kids to climb, slide, and explore. There’s even a walking trail.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Elephant Care Center

Understand how elephants are cared for in the Elephant Care Center. When we visited the Care Center we were able to see several elephants being cared for.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium rhinoceros

See how you measure up to other rhinoceroses. What age rhino would you be?

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Hoot like a Gorilla

Hoot like a gorilla in the gorilla exhibit area. In this area, the kids had a hoot recording their hoots and listening to how they compare to gorillas.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium sting ray

Crawl through a sting ray exhibit to get an upclose look at sting rays in their habitat. The tunnel takes kids along side the tank and underneath an area. It comes up in a back corner giving kids a different way to see the sting rays and other creatures in the tank.
