Two River Theater Opens It’s 20th Season with On Borrowed Time

On Borrowed Time opened on  September 14, 2013 and will run through October 13, 2013 at the Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey. The play was written by Paul Osborn and directed by Tony and Academy Award winner Joel Grey.

We were given the opportunity to interview Oakes Fegley, the 8 year old who plays “Pud” in On Borrowed Time. I have a 9 year old who is in the early stages of being interested in drama, he couldn’t wait to interview Oakes. My son enjoyed picking the brain of a child who had the same interests as he does.

Interview conducted by Logan, age 9

What was the first play you ever acted in?

A Christmas Carol in 2009 as Tiny Tim. Then, I did the next four years in a row in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

How do you handle pre-show jitters?

I don’t get pre-show jitters.

Do you have any special routines you do before a show?

I go over the script with my mom. If its a musical, I do vocal warm ups and if there’s dancing in the show I stretch my arm and leg a little bit.

How do you feel playing the role originally by Academy and Tony Award winning director Joel Grey?

I think it’s really fun! It’s a very good experience for me.

Do you resemble your character “Pud” in any way?

I’m playful like Pud, but I don’t really resemble him in other ways.

Is it hard to learn your lines, and do you have any tricks for remembering them?

No tricks really, I try to remember them scene by scene. When I go off and come back out, it’s a whole new scene with new lines.

In what ways is your life different from other kids your age?

I get to skip a little bit of school because, I’m either auditioning or acting. My mom, dad, and sister are actors. I went to auditions with my sister. I asked my mom if acting paid, she said some jobs did, so I thought it was a good way to make money for LEGOS.

Is acting your dream job?

Not really, kind of! I want to be an electrical engineer or architect. Acting is my secondary job.

What is your dream role?

I don’t really know. I do know that I would like to be in Oliver, Matilda, or Newsies one day.

Do you have any advice for other kids who want to get into acting?

Make sure you really want to do it! Even if you think you are sick of it, just keep going to the auditions anyway.

Oakes Fegley (Pud), age 8, is thrilled to be working with Joel Grey and such an accomplished cast and crew at Two River Theater! Earlier this summer he played Chicken Soup in Really Rosie at the Bucks County Playhouse. He has played Tiny Tim twice, an urchin and Turkey Boy in A Christmas Carol at Civic Theatre back home in Allentown, PA. He plays Paul in the soon-to-be-released film Fort Bliss. Other film credits include This Is Where I Leave You (Young Judd), Prism (Young Bryan), The Truth About Lies (Boy), Glass (Boy), and Children of the Moon (Michael) a short film in which he got to act with his father. He has had an amazing time at Two River and will cherish this experience for the rest of his life.
