Jersey City may be a mostly urban area but it’s been pretty fabulous to find some incredible playgrounds within the city limits. Newport Green Park Playground is another such find. It’s a rather large playground situated between skyscrapers and city streets.
Trust me when I say there’s so much to do here that you might just forget you’re in the city. Once you enter this gated playground there’s a world of fun waiting for the kids.

Where is Newport Green Park Playground located?
The park is located at 14th Street and Washington Boulevard in Jersey City in Hudson County. The park is privately owned and managed by the Newport Associates Development Company. The playground is also referred to as a playport.
What kind of playground equipment does Newport Green Park have?
This playground is not like most playgrounds in that there are multiple structures for playing. In addition to swings and a splash pad/sprayground there are 3 climbing structures, a ship playground, a multicolor playground, and more.
Our last feature on this playground was back in 2013 when Melanie wrote about it. It looks like there have been some changes since then. For example, the sand play area inside the playground has been replaced with a climbing arch.

Are there swings?
There were two different swing structures. One swing structure has 4 traditional swings.
The other swing structure had 4 baby swings.
Are there slides?
Among the various structures, there is a total of 1 side-by-side slide, 1 slightly curvy slide, and 3 straight slides. All slides are open.
What special features does the playground offer?
There are A LOT of special features and play areas at this playground in Jersey City. Let’s start with all the ways to climb. One of the main attractions at this playground is the large climbing web with horizontal and vertical ropes, thin and thick ropes, an angled ladder/slide, and a hanging seat in the middle of the web.
There is a small climbing arch for preschoolers and toddlers.
Rock Climbing Wall Tower
This rock climbing tower lets kids get to the top by climbing its outer walls or taking steps. There’s a spot to hang out on the top and a hanging seat underneath. Slide back down to the bottom or use the ladder and monkey bars.
The other main attraction of this park is the spray park. This sprayground goes beyond just having a few sprinklers. There are yellow rings misting water as you walk under them, blue buckets overhead dump water frequently, poles spray water at various heights, and colored spots on the ground shoot water upward.
The two-level ship playground lets kids pretend to be pirates or sailors out to see. It includes a slide, rope wall, and plenty of space to play on the ground level or a lookout deck above.
The multicolor playground offers 3 slides, unique activity walls, a twisting climbing ladder, a climbing wall, a shady space to play underneath, and more.
Spread among the equipment there are other features like ride on toys, spinners, and a balance beam.
What kind of ground cover does the playground have?
The ground cover is colorful rubber padding.
Is the playground at Newport Green Park accessible?
There is some ground-level play available for children with wheelchairs and strollers. The ground cover is also smooth. There are no ramps onto the equipment or accessible swings.
The playground structures are top notch! A couple of them had us wondering how they were to be used – logic coming into play on a playground! Kids were spinning, swinging, and climbing in new and unique ways.
Is there shade available at the Newport Green Park Playground?
There are shady spots built into most of the playground structures.
Additionally, there were a few picnic tables with umbrellas. Food is not allowed in the playground.
Where is parking for Newport Green Park?
There is some free street parking available. If you are unable to find free parking other metered street parking is available.
Are there restrooms at Newport Green Park Playground?
Courtesy restrooms are located on North Boulevard, not at the playground or park.
What else is there to do at Newport Green Park?
In addition to the playground at Newport Green Park Playground, there are additional amenities available for visitors.
Are there walking trails?
There is a paved path that can be walked around the park. It is past the playground and carousel. Or guests can walk through the town along the water on the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway.
Are there fields or courts for sports?
There are no fields or courts for sports, but there is some open grassy area with turf outside of the park.
Between the Hudson River and the playground, there is an over 7,500 square feet urban beach complete with a wooden boardwalk. Gaze out onto the Hudson River from lounge chairs on the boardwalk all while your kids play under an umbrella in the sand. Special note, there is no access to the water from the Newport Green Park beach.
The seasonal carousel opens at the end of May. During the season, the Newport Carousel is open daily from 11 am to 6 pm. There is a small fee to ride the carousel. In previous years it was a $1 per person. It had not yet opened for the 2022 season during our visit and there was not signage listing 2022 prices.

The park stretches over more than four beautifully landscaped acres.
Newport Green Park is a short walk to Hoboken (entering through the train station). Along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, there are free viewfinders to gaze across the Hudson, and educational signs teaching visitors about wildlife along the waterfront. The walkway offers a great opportunity to get some exercise and wander into Hoboken for lunch.
