What month is best for pumpkin picking in NJ?

The best time to pick pumpkins in New Jersey is during the months of September and October. September is when pumpkin season starts, and typically the pumpkin season runs through the end of October.

Most people will choose October to pick pumpkins to gear up for Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations, but it is up to you and your preference.

When does the pumpkin picking season generally start in NJ?

September is the month of pumpkin season in New Jersey, but that doesn’t always mean that the pumpkins will be grown and ready. Pumpkins are usually ready to be picked in New Jersey at the end of September rather than at the beginning.

A safe bet for finding a pumpkin ready to pick would be to contact the local growers in your area. They can give you a timeframe or tell you that the pumpkins are ripe and ready for picking!

The growing seasons can vary depending on weather patterns and climate, so it’s a good idea to double-check the information before heading to the patch. Some years, insects and pests can be particularly troublesome affecting the growth and success of pumpkins.

Most local growers are great about updating their websites or social media channels to keep customers in the know about when the pumpkins are ready.

How long does pumpkin picking season last in NJ?

Typically, the pumpkin season is going to last about one-two months. However, since the pumpkin season is at the end of September, it’s a safe bet to say that October tends to be the busier of the two months due to the holidays that fall during that month and directly after.

When are the best days to pick pumpkin during the season?

You’re going to want to hit up the pumpkin patch on days that the sun is shining. This will let you get a good look at the ripe pumpkins so that you can quickly notice any blemishes or rough spots that you might not otherwise spot during a dark or overcast day.

If you want to beat the crowds, a weekday will be less crowded and might just give you prime picking choices!

When is the best time of day to pick pumpkins?

Once the pumpkins are ripe, choose a dry and sunny day to pick your pumpkins. This way, you can get a good look at the vines and decide the type of pumpkin you like by the coloring and texture.

What do you wear while pumpkin picking?

The most important thing to wear is proper footwear. Make sure you and the pumpkin pickers in your family wear comfortable footwear like sneakers or work shoes. Closed-toe shoes are better because it can be muddy or sandy between rows of vines.

If it’s sunny then a hat would be very helpful. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty.

Check out these cute pumpkin-picking t-shirts.

While not needed, gardening gloves can help keep your hands from getting sticky or dirty. Here are a few we’ve discovered on Amazon.

How much does it cost to pick your own pumpkins?

Most pumpkin farms have pumpkins priced according to their size. More miniature pumpkins are typically around $5-$7, medium-sized pumpkins are closer to $10-$12, and oversized pumpkins can be upwards of $20 or more.

There are even massive pumpkins that can cost $50 or more! However, some NJ pumpkin patches have $1 pumpkins for the kids that are cute mini pumpkins for them to paint on.

Do you need to bring your own container for pumpkins?

Pumpkins can be heavy, especially if you’re planning to buy a few. They are typically too big to carry in a bag.

Instead, we recommend using your beach cart or wagon. If you have something you normally use to bring all your gear down to the beach, it’s very likely that the same wagon or cart will work for carrying your pumpkins across a field.

One thing to keep in mind, if you’re planning to take a hayride out to the pumpkin patch you’ll want a wagon or cart that’s easy to fold down and bring on the hayride.

Here are a few foldable carts and wagons for pumpkin picking.

How long does it take to pick pumpkins?

It generally doesn’t take long to pick pumpkins, because most families are only picking a few. How long it takes to pick pumpkins will depend on how selective you are and how many pumpkins the NJ pumpkin patch has available. Go early in the season for the best availability.

Tips for Picking Pumpkin at NJ farms

Before picking pumpkins in New Jersey follow these helpful tips.

Call ahead of time for picking availability.

We have many of the picking times at NJ pumpkin patches available in this article. Picking for any fruit or vegetable is dependent on how the crop is doing that season, time of the season, etc. Often farms may stop picking for some time to let pumpkin ripen as well. Call before going or check their social media pages to see what the picking status is for the farm.

How do you know when a pumpkin is good to pick?

To know when a pumpkin is good to pick, you need to look at the stem. If the stem is brown in color and looks a bit dried out, that should be a significant clue that the pumpkin is ripe and ready.

An excellent mature pumpkin ready to be picked will have a nice, bright orange coloring to it, indicating that it’s ripe and ready to harvest.

Firmness is also a significant indicator that the pumpkin is ripe and ready. If you press the outer layer of the pumpkin, it should be firm and hard to the touch.

You can also tap the pumpkin gently to see if it’s ripe. If you hear a hollow noise, that is an excellent sign that the pumpkin is ready to come home with you.

What’s the best way to pick pumpkins from vines?

The best way to pick a pumpkin is to use a sharp knife and cut off the stem. However, you still want to leave a little bit of the stem (about 3 inches or so) because that does provide protection from insects getting into the pumpkin after it’s been picked.

It’s essential to note that you don’t want to try and pull the pumpkin stem off with your bare hands because the pumpkin stem is covered with many prickles that will cut and hurt your hands. The stem of a pumpkin is also extremely tough and durable as well. This is why a sharp object or knife is a must-have for picking your pumpkins.

One quick thing to note, some NJ pumpkin patches have already precut their pick your own pumpkins from the vines. So while you’re still touring the field to pick a pumpkin you don’t have to ‘pick’ it from the vine.

Show care to the farm

Be careful not to trample other plants as you move around a pumpkin patch. Don’t rush from one area to the next. Inspect all pumpkins from a vine before moving on to the next one. You may have to walk around the vines to find pumpkins ready for picking.

Be sure to also check any Covid-19 guidelines for farms before going.

Come prepared

Since you or the kids might pick a larger pumpkin, consider bringing a backpack to carry it back to your car. A backpack will allow your child to put the weight of the pumpkin on their back and still have their hands free for getting into and out of the hayride.

What should I do after picking pumpkins?

To keep your pumpkins alive for as long as possible, don’t cut into them. As long as you leave them whole, they’ll last for weeks and possibly a month or more. Cutting into them will cause them to rapidly ripe and start the rotting process.

If there is cold weather in the forecast, do your best to cover any pumpkins outside with a blanket, or bring them inside out of the cold weather for the best results.

Curing pumpkins is also an option and is a simple way to extend the life of a pumpkin as well. You can cure pumpkins by storing them in a warm place with a temperature of 80-85 degrees for up to 2 weeks. Doing this process can help ripen the pumpkin and harden the skin as well.

To store cured pumpkins, keep them stored in a cool and dry area. However, it’s important to note that if a pumpkin is exposed to a temperature below 45 degrees, this will harm the pumpkin and begin the rotting process.
