My Friend Bernard: Helping Kids Everywhere Conquer Their Fears – Movie Review

Posted on: September 10th, 2012 by

Sam is a shy boy who is afraid of almost everything, from those strange shadows in his room at night to the small dog in his neighborhood. Everything just seems too scary for him! Then, one day Sam meets Bernard, a polar bear who isn’t afraid of anything. Bernard takes Sam on an epic adventure and helps him lose his fear of flying and snowboarding, which allows him to face the biggest monster ever with humor.

Phase 4 Films, recently sent us the advanced screener for My Friend Bernard. My boys thought Bernard was a great movie. It held their attention the entire time. My 8-year-old really connected with Sam (the main character), he cheered him on each time he had to conquer something new. My 11-year-old felt as if Bernard was more of an older brother to Sam protecting him and showing him how to find the courage to conquer his fears and try new things. We even visited a waterpark today where my younger son was scared to go down a slide, my older son took him by the hand and talked to him and asked “What would Sam and Bernard do?” before I knew it my little guy was whizzing down the slides. He did this because of this adorable movie!

The animation in My Friend Bernard is eye-catching and colorful. The movie is completely narrated which is the only thing the boys complained about. They felt that the characters should have speaking parts. As you can see though from the above story it must not have phased them to much because they both took away lessons from the film. I found myself smiling through most of the movie, I thought there were adorable characters, the penguin being my favorite. With chilly Friday nights right around the corner, My Friend Bernard would be a great movie to curl up in the living room and watch with your family. You can even have a discussion like we did after the movie about what things we are afraid of and how we can conquer those fears with the help of friends and loved ones.
