Whips! Brake Checks! Step Up Jumps! Excitement!
Approaching MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, our family had no idea what we were in for. We’ve seen Supercross events on the television, but never live. And the opportunity to be there in what can only be described as a historic occasion was the cherry on top of an already amazing time. This was the first Supercross race to take place anywhere in the Northeast in 23 years! The second to last round of the 2014 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship and by the crowds and atmosphere, I’ve no doubt that they’ll never let so much time slip by again!
The average turn out for any motocross National is about 30,000 attendees. The inaugural MetLife Supercross brought in more than 62,000 fans! Nowhere was this more evident than walking through the parking lot at MetLife Stadium. There was tailgating, hundreds of cars and campers and a palatable energy level even before entering the stadium. We didn’t make it early enough to enjoy the Pit Party, an additional fee of free if you bring a Monster Energy Drink can to recycle. Quick tip, I found out, the top riders only sign autographs at certain times and a special ticket is needed. Getting the ticket is free, but they are of limited quantity. You must stop by the team’s rig early in the day and line up.
There is never a dull moment at the 2014 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship! After the singing of the national anthem, my kids’ minds were blown when the fireworks shot off!
The energy level further increased as they introduced the riders and all you could hear was the collective roar of the crowd. And then finally it was time for the first race. The riders lined up, the clock ticked down and with a loud bang a hot fireball made its way into the sky followed by a perfect plume of smoke to announce the start of the race.
Seeing the racing first hand is unbelievable. My son, a dirt bike fan has an obsession with all things racing. His eyes never left the field. My daughter shrieked when the bikes hit the first turn and flew high in the air. “They’re flying!” she said and it certainly did appear that they were.
We cheered the winners of each qualifying race, cringed a bit when a rider fell and stood at the edge of our seats more than once because of the neck in neck action. As the sun set and the beginning drops of rain fell from the sky I looked at the 500 truckloads of dirt that made the track and my son said “are they going to stop it?” It’s Supercross! Rain will not stop it at all. In fact it made it all the more exciting. We put on our ponchos and not a complaint came from either child as we sat and watched each race. The LCQ (last chance qualifier) even served educationally for my kids – don’t give up cause there’s always a chance to take it!
And a highlight was having some of the pit crew come up and end up sitting right by us!!
Finally, we came to the last race and what a treat to experience the second historic occasion of the night. We got to watch Ryan Villopoto walk away with his third win in a row and his fourth AMA Supercross Champion number one plate! He’s only the second person to accomplish four titles in a row! What an amazing feat and what an exhilarating and amazing opportunity to be there to see it!
As we walked out of MetLife Stadium that night, my son asked me “Can we see this again?” Of course we’ll be back. In fact, the date for the 2015 race has already been announced: April 25! Mark your calendars now! I assure you, you will not regret it.
