MOANA’S MISSION — Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) may be a demigod—half god, half mortal, all awesome—but he’s no match for Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho), who’s determined to sail out on a daring mission to save her people. Moana's first challenge is convincing Maui to join her. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, produced by Osnat Shurer, and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i, “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016. ©2016 Disney. A spunky teenager with a mission to save her culture. A demigod with moving tattoos. Music from Lin-Manuel Miranda. Moana all adds up to your next family movie!

Did you know it takes over 5 years for a Disney animated movie to make it to the screen?

Jersey Family Fun was invited to a talk by Disney Creative Director Jessica Julius, and we learned some insider info about the newest movie, Moana. With a story in mind, the production team took multiple trips to research the spirit and culture of Oceania (Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa, etc) and to make a movie as true to the culture as possible. One quote that stuck with me was said to the team by an elder: “For years, we have been swallowed by your culture,’ he said. ‘This one time, can you be swallowed by ours?”

With the story of the demigod Maui, the dance, the music and the scenery, its obvious the Moana filmmakers listened to that plea and kept Moana as authentic as fits the story (as Jessica Julius explained, the story is not a documentary and still needs to entertain). The music has roots in Pacific culture, as do the cast. The lead is Auli’i Cravalho who was an undiscovered 14 year old Hawaiian when cast! She held her own against Dwayne Johnson, which is one impressive feat.

Jessica shared clips from the film with us, as well as some behind the scenes from the visits by the filmmakers. We were most impressed by the images of the ocean – and the scenes between young Moana and the ocean might just be your favorite (they were ours!). Moana is a story about knowing where you’re from so you know where you’re going and who you’re meant to be. A great message for any age and a film that all will enjoy.

The characters, the music, the story, Moana all adds up to a beautiful film.

In the words of Walt Disney Pictures:

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.

Moana Movie review

A week after our Moana presentation, my family attended an early screening of Moana, and it was enjoyed by all. The story was meaningful, the music is catchy, and the characters leave you wanting more. In true Disney tradition there’s a fun animal sidekick in Heihei, the less than intelligent chicken who stows away on Moana’s canoe. The kakamora pirates – so cute but so dangerous. Your kids are going to want their action figures for sure!

Moana movie review

At times the audience laughter was so loud! It was clearly enjoyed by all ages. There are a few intense battle scenes, and some references to bathroom humor. Disney always sticks “Easter eggs” in their films and in Moana, keep an eye out for a quick glance of character from Frozen! Check out the trailer below, and take your family for movie night with Moana!
