I remember when I first discovered the Liberty State Park playgrounds in Jersey City NJ. I was geeking out because I had never and still have never seen playgrounds quite like it. While most New Jersey state parks have the same playground set up these playgrounds are unlike any playground you will find at any other New Jersey state park. And the playgrounds are pretty unique as far as NJ playgrounds go.
Do not visit Liberty State Park without making time to stop at the playgrounds. If we lived closer, my boys and I would have been there ALL THE TIME.

Where are Liberty State Park Playgrounds located?
There are multiple playgrounds at Liberty State Park. The first few are halfway in the middle of this state park. The other playground is located at the far end/corner near the U.S. Flag Plaza and visitor’s center. The park is part of the New Jersey State Parks system.

What kind of playground equipment do the Liberty State Park Playgrounds have?
There are so many playground structures to explore a child could never be bored at the Liberty State Park playgrounds. A faux wood carved playground, a ninja course, a marine-themed playground.. and if that’s not enough there is a treehouse playground as well. There are slides, climbing walls, monkey bars, climbing webs…so so much to do.

Are there swings?
There are no swings at any of the Liberty State Park playgrounds.
Are there slides?
There were at least 5 slides on the main playground structure and 3 slides on treehouse structure.




What special features does the playground offer?
There are so many special features at the Liberty State Park playgrounds that it’s hard to list them all in one post, but I will do my best.
Larger playground structure
- Forest-themed playground equipment that looks like it was carved out of wood with animal carvings to match.
- A Ninja-course with spinners, climbing walls, jumping platforms and more.

- A large playground structure with oversized animals that serve as ladders to get to the playground equipment.
- A large climbing web

Smaller playground structure near flags
- Treehouse-themed playground equipment
What kind of ground cover does the playground have?
The ground cover for all the playground areas is wood mulch.

Are the playgrounds at Liberty State Park accessible?
The largest of the playground structures is accessible. It has a wide ramp accessible by wheelchairs and strollers. There is a wheelchair-accessible cruiser and sensory play areas. The treehouse-themed playground and forest-themed playground are really cool to look at but are not accessible.




Is there shade available at the Liberty State Park Playgrounds?
There is shade available on the playground equipment and in some areas under the playground equipment.


Where is parking for the Liberty State Park Playgrounds?
There are multiple parking lots at Liberty State Park. Each playground has a parking lot that is adjacent to the playground area. Parking is free. Parking lot 7 is the closest parking lot to the larger playground equipment.

Are there restrooms at Liberty State Park Playgrounds?
Each playground area has a building with restrooms. The playground near the flags also had port-a-potties available for those times the park is particularly crowded.
What else is there to do at Liberty State Park?
Liberty State Park is phenomenal, there are so many additional activities available for guests. Make time to visit the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, Nature Interpretive Center, and other areas. Visitors can enjoy kayaking, sailboating, and paddleboarding in the Harbor near the Caven Point Beach end.

Are there walking trails?
During your visit to Liberty State Park you can walk the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway for different views of the Harbor, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty. There are also many sidewalks and pathways that criss-cross around the park.

Are there fields or courts for sports?
There are no fields for courts, but there are open spaces of grass.
