Liberty Science Center new exhibits

Liberty Science Center is one of our family’s top New Jersey destinations! We always find something new to discover and always seem to spend more time there than planned. Both of our children leave having learned something, burned off some energy and excited to go back. When we were provided tickets to see the Liberty Science Center new exhibits we couldn’t get there fast enough to see the ILLUSION: Nothing Is As It Seems exhibit. Magic, physics, tricks of the mind – exciting! Even luckier for us, we were also able to visit the new Mythbusters exhibit on its preview day. These two thrilling and interactive exhibits in addition to all the rest Liberty Science Center has to offer made for a perfect way to spend a recent day off from school!

Elevator floor!

We arrived early to no lines (we highly recommended to start early, both to avoid lines and have more time to play!) and headed right to the first of the Liberty Science Center new exhibits: ILLUSION: Nothing Is As It Seems. Even the elevator welcomed us in a brain twisting way!

Magic, Physics, Science and More

Did you know that Liberty Science Center has a magician-in-residence to highlight the connection between science and magic? And that magician is no other than David Blaine? If you’ve watched any of his specials you know what to expect, and that’s to expect the unexpected! Inside the exhibit space you’ll find interactive displays that incorporate sight, sound and touch. We were drawn to the first display near the entrance, The Hurwitz Singularity by Jonty Hurwitz. What you see from the side is NOT what you see from the front!

There was plenty more to explore. My children put on headphones and glasses and watched something on the screen – but the screen was blank to me with no glasses!  We watched our faces morph into animals, bugs crawl off a screen and onto our hands, some impossible items caught inside glass jars, and other tricks of the mind. What I liked best was the presence of staff members throughout the exhibit. Some of the displays weren’t immediately identifiable, or needed some guidance and the Liberty Science Center staff were all proactively helping.

With our brains bent after a lot of “how do they do that!” we headed next door to the second of the Liberty Science Center new exhibits Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition for more brain benders and scientific mysteries.

Experimenting With Fun!

Playing the killer card toss in the Liberty Science Center new exhibits Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition

Can you get a card to stick on the target?

Mythbusters is an interactive, fun and lively exhibit based on the popular television program. Fans of the show will enjoy seeing props from the show’s actual sets and experiences, but you don’t have to be a fan of the show to visit. I have one child who has watched the show and one who hasn’t, and they were both completely enthralled by the experiments. The exhibit has informational videos near each experiment, with details provided by the stars of the show, and there are plenty of LSC staff members ready to explain to you how the experiments work and get you started. There’s a show every half hour where willing participants can find out if they can dodge a bullet, and all other experiments are open at all times. Try “Airplane on a Conveyer Belt,” “Butter Side Up,” “The Big Bad Wolf” and more!

Our favorite NEW Liberty Science Center new exhibits?

Killer Card Toss – Where the kids and I all could not stop throwing cards until we succeeded! A speed detector will tell you how fast you throw a card, and you can determine if you’re accurate or not. Safer than darts and more fun – and educational! Can you beat the record of 92 miles an hour? We didn’t come close but were happy when we hit the target!

Walking and running through the rain chamber in the Liberty Science Center new exhibits Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition

Rain Chamber – Will you get wetter walking or running through the rain chamber? Find a partner and try it out! When you’re done, head over to the blacklight and mirrors to find out for sure. The water is treated so that it glows under the blacklight.

Trying the tablecloth chaos trick in the Liberty Science Center new exhibits Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition

Tablecloth Chaos – Encouraging your kids to throw dishes on the floor? My kids couldn’t wait and wanted to do this over and over. Of course that’s not the objective, the experiment is to see if you can keep the dishes on the table! Try various amount of plates, position them differently and even try two kinds of tablecloths.

The ILLUSION and Mythbusters exhibits, Liberty Science Center new exhibits, will appeal to all ages! Just like throughout the rest of Liberty Science Center, these exhibits hold your attention, get you involved and even teach you something. Get Liberty Science Center on your list for your next family outing!
