Pivot! As an entrepreneur, I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve heard that word since the pandemic started. I’ve lost count. To tell you the truth it’s been a challenge to figure out how to pivot and tell you about fun things to do with your children when so much of New Jersey has been closed. We’re finding ways, it’s just not as easy as it used to be.
Enter the Jersey Classroom, your source for New Jersey educational worksheets for homeschooling and virtual learning in New Jersey.
About the Jersey Classroom
Like many parents, I’ve spent this summer worrying about what the upcoming school year would look like for my sons and me. It wasn’t just a question of whether or not would my kids go back to school, but would I go back to substitute teaching.
I love teaching. I haven’t done it full time since my last son was born but I was starting to get back into substitute teaching. It’s substitute teaching and this site that makes it possible for my sons to get a private high school education. Now, I was faced with a dilemma most working parents are. Do I send my boys and I back to school so that I can work? Or do I keep them home and try to come up with an alternate plan?
It was in that struggle that late one night the Jersey Classroom was born. It started with the idea of leading what’s now being called Pandemic Pods. I thought I’ll teach 2-3 students in my home along with my youngest son. I’ll help them learn their virtual lessons. But not just that I’ll develop educational worksheets for them to enrich what they are learning online.
Then, I thought if I am already developing educational worksheets for New Jersey students that I’ll teach in my home, why not share those printables with others who will be virtual learning or homeschooling in New Jersey for the first time.
Nothing can replace the one-on-one contact between a student and teacher. But if supplemental educational worksheets are enjoyable and helpful they can keep students on track until they are able to be in a traditional classroom again.
How will the Jersey Classroom work?
Educational worksheets for New Jersey students will be available on this site and through books we’ll make available for sale. I’ll be developing new printables, creating videos, and sharing links to other great educational content.
What kind of educational worksheets will be available for NJ students?
The Jersey Classroom worksheets are not meant to replace the lessons New Jersey students will get through virtual instruction or a homeschooling curriculum. Rather they are a way to supplement and enrich your child’s learning with worksheets and printables that are fun and relatable.
- Writing & Language Arts
- Social Studies
When necessary answer keys will be provided. For math, I’ll show my work so you and your kids can understand the process behind the problem.
What grade are these for?
The Jersey Classroom educational worksheets are best suited for New Jersey students in grades 4th fourth through 6th sixth. Of course students in other grades are welcome to use them. Use them with younger students who may be looking for more challenging work or enrichment activities. You can also use them with older students who want to strengthen their skills in any content areas.
Do I need to live in New Jersey to use these worksheets?
No. While these educational worksheets will be themed around fun things to do in New Jersey and New Jersey history and developed with New Jersey Leaning Standards in mind, any family can take advantage of these.
How will these worksheets be developed?
These New Jersey worksheets are being written and developed by me with New Jersey Learning Standards in mind. When there’s a specific learning standard a worksheet relates to I will note that on the printable.
I am a licensed New Jersey teacher for grades K-8 with 15 graduate level credits in education from Stockton University. I’ve taught primarily middle school students.
I developed a love for math through teaching and tutoring for the Princeton Review for nearly 10 years. I took that experience and used it to develop math worksheets for my students when I taught at William Davies Middle School back in the early 2000s.
With that past experience in mind, I am pouring over the New Jersey Learning Standards to see what is expected of New Jersey students in grades 4th through 6th so that I can develop worksheets that best help them meet those requirements.
The vocabulary, may be tougher, than your student is used to. There’s a reason for that. I have seen the importance of vocabulary on standardized tests such as the SATs and other grade level testing. A great vocabulary can carry over to other parts of your student’s academic success. They will be able to write better essays and speak more intelligently. By starting now, we’ll get a head start on preparing them for future success. Trust me, it’s easier to learn 100 vocabulary words over 20 weeks than 500 a month before the SAT.
These New Jersey worksheets will be fun for your kids, or at least more fun than the typical boring worksheets. The educational worksheets will bring in experiences your kids have had or would like to have in New Jersey. From riding a roller coaster at Great Adventure to splashing it up in Morey’s Piers from climbing a lighthouse to hiking in the New Jersey State Parks, the problems I create and the topics we discuss will be relevant to your kids and engage them in their learning.
