James G. Atkinson Memorial Park Playground in Sewell is another playground that has undergone a renovation since another Jersey Family Fun mom wrote about it back in 2013. The towers and tunnel are no longer there, but there are still two playground areas for kids and both are new.

Where is James G. Atkinson Memorial Park Playground located?

The James G. Atkinson Memorial Park (Formally known as Bethel Mill Park) is located at 138 Bethel Mill Road in Sewell, New Jersey in Gloucester County. My GPS used the entrance on Parke Place Boulevard – this does not put you anywhere near the playground, so make sure you use this address. The park is part of the Gloucester County park system.

What kind of playground equipment does the James G. Atkinson Memorial Park have?

There are two playground areas: one for children 5 and younger and one for children 5 to 12 years of age. Both playgrounds offer slides, swings, and climbing areas.

Are there swings?

On the playground for younger kids, there are 3 baby/toddler swings, 1 accessible swing, and 1 buddy/companion swing.

On the older kids’ playground, there are 2 traditional swings, 2 baby/toddler swings, 2 accessible swings, and 1 buddy/companion swing.

Are there slides?

There are multiple slides on each playground of different varieties – straight, curvy, tunnel, and bumpy. Pictured here are the tunnel slide, a side-by-side slide, and a straight slide.

The older kids’ playground has a side-by-side slide with 3 paths and a wavy slide.

What special features does the playground offer?

There is an obstacle course with a balance beam for younger kids, monkey bars and climbing features for older kids, a springy ride on car, a stand-up see-saw, bridges, a rock climbing wall, and more!

What kind of ground cover does the playground have?

The ground cover for both playground areas is wood mulch.

Is the playground at James G. Atkinson Memorial Park accessible?

There are accessible swings on both swing sets, but there are no ramps on the equipment like the previous playground had. There is a stand-alone musical instrument structure on the playground that may be accessible. It is in the wood mulch without a paved path to it.

Is there shade available at the James G. Atkinson Memorial Park Playground? 

There are plenty of benches and tables on the grass in shaded areas and a large pavilion with tables and benches. With so many trees in this park, they provide lots of shade for parts of the playground.

There is a parking lot across from the playground.

Are there walking trails?

There is a large shaded walking trail that surrounds the playground and goes through the park. Additionally, there is an exercise trail for walking, jogging, and bicycling.

The fitness trail has 4 exercise stations each focusing on a different workout. Also along the fitness trail, you can visit Millennium Plaza, featuring a walking path, benches, and sundials representing the past and present.

Are there fields or courts for sports? 

There are several lighted fields and courts for sports during the day and evening hours:

  • Lighted Softball/Soccer Fields
  • 6 Lighted Pickle Ball Courts
  • 8 Lighted Tennis Courts
  • Lighted Basketball Courts
