About Grammy’s Hugs
Grammy’s Hugs is a beautiful story about the everlasting love of a grandparent written by a Southern New Jersey resident (and grandma!). The book is about a grandmother who promised she would hug her new granddaughter for the rest of her life… and so she did. On the soccer field, in school, at the prom and even on her job interviews! But when it was not possible for the Grandmother to be at her side, the hugs would still be there. They’d be hugs of the heart.
Intended for young children, this colorful book uses drawings to illustrate the actions and emotions of the characters quite well. The words and rhyming pattern are well-suited for early readers.

About Grandma’s Purse
When Grandma Mimi comes to visit, she always brings warm hugs, sweet treats…and her purse. You never know what she’ll have in there—fancy jewelry, tokens from around the world, or something special just for her granddaughter. It might look like a normal bag from the outside, but Mimi and her granddaughter know that it’s pure magic!
I love this book as a great example of the generous spirit that grandmas have. This grandma shares not only what’s in her purse but also why it’s there. In the end we find that grandma’s purse even has a surprise inside for one special granddaughter.

About A Hug For Grandma
Jordi’s grandma, who speaks no English, has come to live with them. Jordi hardly knows her, can’t relate to her, and is unwilling to hug her. But when he finds himself home with her during a fierce thunderstorm, they turn to each other for comfort. At last a grateful Jordi reaches out to hug Grandma.
I love this book as a great example of how grandparents and grandchildren can communicate and help each other even if there’s a language barrier. This is best suited for independent readers from 2nd grade through 4th. Younger readers should read it with an adult like their grandparent.
Arturo and the Navidad Birds
- Author: Anne Broyles
- Retail Price: $16.99
About Arturo and the Navidad Birds
Arturo and his Abue Rosa (grandmother) prepare to decorate their Navidad tree in this children’s bilingual story. As they carefully unpack the ornaments, Abue recalls memories of each one, some of which are from her childhood and some from dear friends and relatives. When Arturo accidentally breaks a precious glass bird (pajarito), he hides it and tries to create a replacement. The boy is wracked with guilt and finally confesses to Abue, who reassures him that people and memories are more important than things.
This book is great for children to learn about other cultures, how they celebrate holidays, and family traditions that are important to them. It also teaches an important lesson to children about honesty, responsibility, and forgiveness. I especially love that this book is bilingual. On each page, we see the story paragraphs presented in English and Spanish. This book would be a wonderful addition to a family with multilingual family members or a classroom with multilingual students.

On the field trip the children pick apples and run through the corn maze. They also learn the value of working together and and how to treat others.
This book combines a great fall activity like picking apples with honoring grandparents and character skills. It also shows another way grandparents can be involved in their grandchildren’s lives.
When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia
- Author: Toby Haberkorn
- Retail Price: $12.99
About When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia
When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia is a resource for how to explain dementia and/or Alzheimer’s in an age appropriate way. It provides conversational openings and stimulates discussion between parents and children about compassion and this debilitating disease. Alzheimer’s and other dementia conditions not only affect the person suffering from the disease, but the entire family, especially the children. This story explores the difficult reality of dementia and the bittersweet changing relationship between a granddaughter and her grandmother. By including children in the family discussion, parents help them become resilient and empower them to provide comfort for the grandparents or loved ones with Alzheimer’s.
I appreciate this children’s book giving parents a way to explain what may be happening with their grandparents in a way children can understand. Each page is limited to a few sentences. As we read through the pages we can see how the onset of grandma’s Dementia begins to change the relationship between the grandparent and grandchild. Yet, with assistance from mom, the grandchild learns to remember those good memories and still enjoy time with her grandma.
