Read about a visit to the 2015 Roseland Holiday Train show below!
To the left of the main entrance of The Roseland Free Public Library lives a train exhibit that arrives the week before Christmas and remains until one week after. For these two weeks the Community Room is home to several trains that belong to the man, Bill “Mr. Conductor” Cinque, who runs this show. For twelve years, his exhibit has been delighting young children and entrancing others into the world of trains.
As the mom of a son who recently learned and became obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine, I am learning how much children love trains. Visiting this exhibit, you will see children lying on the floor hovering as close as they can be to the train tracks. Toddlers will stand smiling while pointing towards a passing train containing miniature horses. You will even see young at heart adults stop by to watch in amazement. This is a nice break between the chaos of holiday shopping. A quiet moment to just be able to sit back, watch, and enjoy to the soundtrack of “choo choo” and “woo woo”. There is a calm hum of the trains chugging throughout the room.
The trains range from the traditional to the Polar Express to Thomas, including Percy and James to the whimsical Donald Duck handcar. There are bridges, buildings and small town scenes set up in the room. Mats are placed on the floor for children to lie down and have an up close look at the trains as they zip by the audience. The rules are simple: don’t touch the trains or the displays.
While the exhibit is not being expanded, it does consume the entire room aside from seats and the mats. Trains are exchanged every ten to fifteen minutes depending on the interest of the volunteers assisting “Mr. Conductor” that day. Don’t be surprised when the overhead lights are turned off to demonstrate how cool the room looks when brightened from the lights of the windows of the trains and buildings.
The reasons I recommend the Holiday Train Exhibit at the Roseland Free Public Library:
- I recommend visiting the Holiday Train Exhibit at the Roseland Free Public Library as this is a simple yet great activity for young children or the train enthusiast. It appeals to a wide variety of audiences.
- For young children, it is easy to sit down in a chair and still have a view of your child. For my daughter who is still waddling, I was perfectly comfortable letting her walk around while my son walked around easily.
- You can drop in and stay as long as you like during exhibit hours. For some families, this may be a fifteen minute break from holiday chores. For other families, it might be wise to bring a Kindle as their children will spend a longer period of time. My children stayed for an hour on the first visit, fifteen minutes the second, and a half hour on the third visit. Some of the volunteers who help Bill have been regulars at the train exhibit since it started.
- I recommend the Roseland Holiday Train Exhibit because it is a wholesome family activity and you can’t beat the price. It’s free!
