February 19 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 1:00 pm on Sunday and Wednesday, repeating until March 29, 2020
Tours of the Museum every Wednesday and Sunday 1pm – 4pm
Completed in 1764, Proprietary House has served as a residence to New Jersey’s last Royal Governor, a stylish hotel, a private mansion, a retirement home, a boarding house, and now a museum.
A true survivor, this building has seen war and peace, fire and storms, neglect and restoration, to stand witness to 250 years of American history. It’s the nation’s last remaining original Royal Governor’s mansion.
Visit the Proprietary House for a free tour and learn about Royal Governor William Franklin, son of Patriot Ben Franklin and his arrest in this very building in June 1776. During the Revolution, Proprietary House was occupied by both Patriot and British troops and, for a time, served as headquarters for both American General Hugh Mercer and British General Sir William Howe.
