Makers Day Schedule

  • Activities – both sessions
    • Pendulum Painting – all ages, 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM or 2 PM to 4 PM. Explore the effect of gravity while creating a unique painting to take home.
    • Color Theory – all ages (younger children WILL need adult aid), 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM or 2 PM to 4 PM.
    • Ice Sculpture – Children under 9 should be accompanied by an adult for this activity. Start with a small block of ice and study the effect of salt on the ice. Watch how colored liquid travels through melted tunnels in the ice and how those colors change when other colors are added. To allow everyone time to experiment, you are asked to limit your time 15 minutes at this station.
    • Spinning Discs – Color one or more discs with primary colors and then spin the disc to watch the colors change. Design a second to find out if spirals of color act differently than blocks or stripes of color. Children under 5 will need an adult’s help.
    • Open STEM play – all ages with adult supervision – 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM or 2 PM to 4 PM
    • Play in the Children’s Room with the library’s collection of STEM kits, puzzles, and other toys. STEM kits will be unavailable for check out, but may be checked out the following week.
  • Activies morning session only: 10:30 – 12:30
    • Engineering Challenges – Ages vary – 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM
    • Building Challenges – Ages 8+ – Use binder clips, clothes pins, and craft sticks to build structures or bridges. Test the strength and stability by trying to hold up a book without collapsing. How many books can your bridge support without falling?
    • Rubberband Helicopters – All Ages. Very young children may need the help of an adult.
    • Color your helicopter, add your propeller and power up your rubberband. Let your copter fly! Can you make your helicopter fly differently if you change the way you let it go? Does your helicopter flyer longer if you twist the rubber band more times? What else can you change that might change it’s flight?
  • Activites Afternoon Session 2:00 to 4:00 only
    • Experiments in design and coding – Ages vary – 2 PM to 4 PM
    • Mix and Match Rubbing Plates and Gears – Ages 5+ – Use a variety of rubbing plates to design clothing, art, or geometric patterns. Play with colors, patterns, and styles.
    • Code Jewelry – Ages 8+ (Younger with the help of an adult) – Coding isn’t just for computers. Decide on a word, name, or short message. Turn this message into a binary code with a key we will provide. Choose some colors and string the code onto a bracelet or necklace to wear or gift.
  • Teen workshops – require registration.
    • Marble Maze 11 – 11:30 AM
    • Marble Maze 11:45 – 12:15 PM
    • Needle Felting (90 Minute + Workshop) 1:30 – 3:00 PM
