H₂Ow Far Can You Walk: 5K Walk for Clean Water
Embrace Relief’s second annual H₂Ow Far Can You Walk: 5K Walk-a-Thon is a family-friendly event that will be held at Liberty State Park in Jersey City to increase awareness about the clean water crisis in Africa and to raise money for Embrace Relief’s Clean Water Initiative and Fountains of Hope Program. Embrace Relief is a 501(c)(3) international charity that has built and reconstructed more than 760 water wells in Africa to date, which are providing clean, filtered water to more than 760,000 people.
Lack of access to clean water leaves millions of people prone to contracting serious life-threatening illnesses and diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Shockingly, a child dies every 2 minutes due to a water-related illness or disease. In Africa, women and girls are responsible for water collection in 8 out of 10 households. Walking for long periods of time to collect water removes them from school and leaves them exposed to gender-based violence and sexual assault. Moreover, the water canisters can weigh up to 70lbs, leading to serious spine, neck, and hip injuries.
However, by walking you can help restore broken wells to be Fountains of Hope for these communities once again. This is a family-friendly walking event that will have music, free water, bananas, and protein bars. This will not be any ordinary walk in the park. Together, we will change thousands of lives in Africa with the gift of clean water.
