When you learned you were pregnant, how did you decide where to deliver your baby?
Was there any deciding? Did you feel like you had choices?
When I think back to being pregnant with my own sons, I didn’t feel like I had a choice where I could deliver. In fact, I don’t remember having many choices at all over my pregnancy.
When it came to local doctors there was one main doctor’s office with 5 different ob/gyn doctors. That’s where most of my friends went for their prenatal care. All of those doctors delivered at the same hospital, the one closest to them. When I talk to friends today or even members of our New Jersey Families Facebook group location is the biggest factor when it comes to where moms are delivering their babies in New Jersey. It’s almost as if we don’t have a choice of where we can deliver our babies, especially in South Jersey. Almost, but that’s changing and I’ll explain more below.
While my doctors were nice and caring I definitely felt pushed along in my pregnancy. I was guided to do things the way they had always been done and not really given many options. It was just around the time that women were being encouraged by other women to make their pregnancy their own. The idea was just catching on, but not with my doctors. I can still remember two specific instances where I really had to push for what I wanted with my doctors. It certainly didn’t feel like they wanted to make my desires happen.
When you add in a high risk pregnancy, a woman’s choices about her prenatal care can seem even more limited. As I recall having preeclampsia with my third son, there were tests I needed to take, frequent exams, and other directives issued by different doctors. While I understand certain pregnancies can require extra testing, I simply didn’t feel like there was a team approach to my care in particular, or even that I owned my own pregnancy – and that almost lead to some very bad outcomes for me.
Fast forward to 10 years later and women in South Jersey have more choices than ever when it comes to where to deliver a baby. Pregnancy is not like it used to be! Women have choices and more options to own their own pregnancy. How so?
