Behind the Scenes at Krispy Kreme

Last Saturday, we hosted another exciting Jersey Family Fun Day for our readers and fellow bloggers. Admission was free and was open to all of our readers. This time we went behind the scenes at Krispy Kreme in Collingswood, New Jersey to see how doughnuts were made and to make a few of our own.  Our guests came from far distances, but in the end  they will tell you it was all worth it.

“The girls talked all the way home in the car about how they got to dip their donuts in chocolate! Thanks again!!!” – Jennifer Schwartz Groatman on our Facebook wall

“You know it was a good day when ur 3 yr old asks if he can make more donuts tomorrow! #JFFFunDay @Jerseyfamilyfun @Krispykremephl thanks!!!” @PopLovingMomma on Twitter

When I first entered the sweet smell of doughnuts was almost too much. I thought I would break down and have one right then and there. But knowing I would be here for 3 hours, I had to hold strong. (I didn’t crack until the second shift. ;-) )  Krispy Kreme typically hosts groups of 15 for tours and birthday parties, so we offered three sessions that morning. We knew we were onto something fun when most of our sessions filled up quickly.

When each kid arrived I greeted them with a smile and their own swag bag. Our thanks to Allied Integrated Marketing, Wikki Stix, and others for giving us some great items to give out. As kids waited for others to arrive, they checked out their Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax pencils, activities sheets, Big Miracle movie posters and other goodies. Some checked out the Krispy Kreme kiddie area with books and a tv. And others got ready for doughnut making by putting on their official Krispy Kreme hats.

With everyone here, Jim, the manager, came over to greet us and tell us about the history of Krispy Kreme and how they make the doughnuts.  Krispy Kreme doughnuts began in 1937 when Vemon Rudolph began selling them to grocery stores in the south. When their sweet smell would drift into the streets, passersby would stop wanting to buy hot doughnuts. Alas, Krispy Kreme was born. Today, Krispy Kreme is still extremely popular in the south. Lucky for us, they’ve also expanded to the north.  The only New Jersey location is in Collingswood, which explains why several of our guests took home dozens of doughnuts.

Jim explained going to Doughnut University and his intense training to make sure that each doughnut is made up to the standards Krispy Kreme expects.  These days the doughnut is prepared FRESH off-site about 30 minutes away. But business is so good, fresh doughnuts are delivered to the Collingswood location several times a day. The finishing touches are put on in your local Krispy Kreme shop. That’s what our guests got to see up close and do themselves.

After watching from the outside, we headed behind the glass to the other side.  Jim told us about each piece of equipment, what it’s used for, and how they ensure the quality of each doughnut. Several of our guests were pleased to learn that the doughnuts we safe for those with nut allergies.

After we learned how the doughnuts are made and how they were glazed, it was on to the highlight of the day. Each kid, and parents if they wanted to, got to dip their own doughnut in chocolate and then take a second dip in sprinkles or jimmies (depending on what area of Jersey you are from. )

Now, the children could have brought their Krispy Kreme doughnuts home to enjoy, but where’s the fun in that? (LOL) All of them stuck around long enough to enjoy them.

And what day isn’t made better, for a kid, than to get a balloon? Jim, graciously,  gave each child their own balloon to take home.
