3 Great Ways to Spend a Spring Day in Union County New Jersey
Check out Trailside Nature Center
Did you know that up in the hills in Mountainside there’s an environmental education center open 7 days a week? Trailside is an indoor center with classrooms, exhibits, and free weekend story times where children (and adults) can learn about the animals native to our area of New Jersey. Live fish and turtles can be seen inside too, but don’t miss the outside! Thirteen miles of hiking trails where you’ll find streams, woodlands and hills – what a great way to spend a warm day.
Picnic and Pedal boat in Warinanco Park or Echo Lake Park
Who doesn’t love a picnic? Whether homemade or store bought, some sandwiches, chips and drinks on a blanket on any spot of grass can provide a relaxing lazy Spring afternoon. If lazy’s not your thing, head over to Warinanco Park (Elizabeth/Linden/Roselle) or Echo Lake Park (Mountainside) and rent a pedal boat. Cost is $10 an hour and the pedal boats are big enough to fit an adult and a couple of kids (at least).
Smell the flowers at Reeves-Reed Arboretum
Every Saturday is Discovery Saturday at Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit. $5 for non members and free to members, join them on Saturdays (check schedule online to confirm) to discover what’s growing, and what kind of birds and insects are also enjoying the blooms! The Arboretum is open daily dawn to dusk, and admission is free so if your spring weekends are filled with games and other activities, no reason to skip them or the arboretum this spring.
