NJ State Theatre Family Day Events in Middlesex County

 

Looking for something to do in Middlesex County on President’s Day, on Monday, February 20? Head to the theater district in downtown New Brunswick for family friendly entertainment and activities. State Theatre Family Day Events will be spread across these New Jersey venues—the State Theatre, George Street Playhouse, Crossroads Theatre, and United Methodist Church, all within close walking distance of the State Theatre.

FREE Performances at Crossroads Theatre during the State Theatre Family Day

7 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick

  • NEW JERSEY TAP DANCE ENSEMBLE
    10:30am-11:15am, 1:30pm-2:15pm
    Come and meet those dancing feet! New Jersey Tap Dance Ensemble will wow you with their high-energy performance and demonstrate some basic tap skills.
  • DRUM CIRCLE
    11:30am-12:15pm
    Hub City Drum n Dance invites the audience to join the circle and make some music! Drums and other percussion instruments will be provided.
  • MR. RAY
    12:30pm-1:15pm, 2:30pm-3:15pm
    Rock out with bestselling children’s musician Mr. Ray. His kicky, bounce-around pop/rock songs will delight parents and youngsters alike.

  • ICE SCULPTING DEMONSTRATION
    11:15am-12:15pm, 1:45pm-2:45pm
    Watch a master artist turn a block of ice into a gorgeous sculpture…using a chainsaw!
  • Fire Truck​
    NEW BRUNSWICK FIRE DEPARTMENT
    NEW BRUNSWICK DARE PROGRAM
    COSTUMED CHARACTERS
    10am-3pm
    Outside, kids can sit behind the wheel of a real fire truck or police ATV, and get their pictures taken with Olaf, Elmo, and the Minions!

 

Learn to dance during Family Day Dance Workshops at the Crossroads

4th-Floor Rehearsal Room, 7 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick

Workshops are FREE, and first come, first served. No registration required.

  • “HAND IN HAND”
    11am-11:45am (ages 3-4; adult needs to participate along with each child)
    A first dance class for young children and their parents! Led by instructors from Princeton Ballet School, the class will focus on discovering the world of rhythm and dance through gentle exercises—”hand in hand” with parents or caregivers.
  • “JAZZ DANCE”
    12pm-12:45pm (ages 9 and up)
    This Princeton Ballet School workshop introduces children to the magic of Broadway…and all that jazz!
  • “BEGINNING BALLET”
    2pm-2:45pm (ages 9 and up)
    An exciting introduction to the world of ballet for young dancers, led by teachers from Princeton Ballet School.

  • Free event at the United Methodist Church, 323 George Street, New Brunswick
    • PHILADELPHIA ZOO: “WHO’S WHO AT THE ZOO”, 11:15 am-12 pm, 12:30 pm-1:15 pm, 2 pm-2:45 pm
      Meet some amazing animals and learn about what they eat, how they behave, how they have evolved to survive in their native environment, and why it is important for humans around the world to protect wild habitats.

 

  • FREE crafts and facepainting in the Crossroads Community Room, 7 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick
    • CRAFT STATIONS Stop by our craft stations and make a cardboard-tube rocket or a mouse finger puppet. (For kids only.) 10 am-3:30 pm
    • FACE PAINTING Show your Family Day spirit by showing off your “cheek art,” courtesy of our talented face painters. (For kids only.) 10 am-3:30 pm

 

  • FREE Activities in the State Theatre, 2nd-Floor Lobby, 15 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick
    • SAND ART & COLORING STATION, 10 am-3:30 pm
      In the upstairs lobby of the State Theatre, kids can get creative by making their own sand art masterpiece. There’s also a FREE coloring station, supplied with crayons and coloring pages.

MOON MOUSE: A SPACE ODYSSEY, 10 am, 12:30 pm & 3 pm
Marvin the mouse is constantly teased and bullied at school by the “cool” mice. Retreating into his science books, he dreams up a world of fantasy where he is the brave hero. He sets off on his homemade rocket for the space adventure of a lifetime—a trip to the moon! While on this cosmic adventure Marvin encounters an assortment of unusual creatures.
