More than a store – the American Girl Place NYC is an experience!

Many of you may be familiar with the American Girl store on 5th Avenue in New York City. It’s a rite of passage for many families to bring their children in, dressed up, dolls in hand for a lunch date or a special treat. The iconic red bags are seen all over Fifth Avenue! American Girl’s store for years was in a grand NYC building but felt small, with a vertical layout and not a lot of space to move especially during the busy holiday season. Reservations at the cafe and salon were in high demand as well.

Last May, American Girl announced a move to a new location, just across Fifth Avenue to Rockefeller Plaza. The move has finally happened! (The American Girl Place NYC is not in Rockefeller Center where NBC Studios and Top of the Rock are, but just across 51st Street at 75 Rockefeller Plaza). It’s just as you’d imagine from American Girl – classic, clean and exciting! We were invited to tour the American Girl Place NYC store before the official grand opening and can say with certainty you’re going to want to check it out soon. Read on for some of our favorite features of the American Girl Place NYC!

Open Floor Plan!

We can’t say enough how much space there is to walk around in the new American Girl store in New York City. Whether you enter from 51st or 52nd Street you’re greeted by space, and of course great American Girl doll and accessories displays. Don’t rush in and miss the windows though! The 51st Street American Girl Place NYC window currently has a holiday display and along 52nd Street you can see right into the salon. More on that later! The New York City American Girl store is two floors; the ground floor and a downstairs accessible by escalator or elevator.

 

Shopping!

Of course, you’re coming to American Girl Place NYC to shop! There is no other place to buy as much American Girl authentic merchandise as at the American Girl stores. Dolls, books, accessories, and clothing for girls are just some of the purchases your children are going to want to leave with. The new store has touchscreen stations for Create Your Own – both dolls and fashions! Plan to spend some time there as the options are endless. There’s a fun Mega Construx display also, with the latest American Girl sets for purchase.

Want to play? Head downstairs for the Wellie Wishers and Bitty Baby area where girls can learn to swaddle, play in the garden and whisper to a friend. Need to take a break, you can do that too in the book section on the ground level.

 

Celebrate a special day at the American Girl Place NYC salon and cafe!

The new New York City location for the American Girl store has a much improved salon that now has room for dolls AND girls! How special to have a manicure or a hairstyle or even ear piercing while your doll gets the same. No doll, no problem! There are dolls to borrow if you want a companion while your services are done! Reservations are suggested and can be made online. My daughter was treated to a manicure and I was happy to see nontoxic kid-friendly nail polish along with a higher end brand. The employees are helpful and patient and encouraging to the kids shopping. I saw a few helping parents find their way too!

 

 

The popular American Girl Cafe has, of course, moved to the new location as well! Pull up a seat for brunch, afternoon tea, lunch or dinner and bring your doll. The menu offers kid-approved favorites like pizza, chicken fingers, and pasta along with more adult choices like salads, seafood, and even wine! I want to visit just to have the amazing sounding Marshmallow Sundae for dessert! The new American Girl cafe has space for private parties as well so if someone’s been really good all year, take a look at the multiple options available for those special celebrations.

My visit to the store was with my 7-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter. My son loudly proclaimed, “THIS IS BETTER THAN I EXPECTED!” My daughter doesn’t play with dolls anymore but that didn’t matter. She was made to feel special by all the staff there, and I think she could have spent hours just looking at all the details of the beautiful clothing. My favorite part was all the positive messages you find throughout the American Girl store in New York City. Look around for quotes everywhere, even on the bathroom mirrors.

American Girl is located at 75 Rockefeller Plaza, between 51st and 52nd Street with entrances on both streets. Hours vary but for the holiday season they will be open most nights until 9 PM. Check their website for up to date information.
