Nestled in the beautiful mountains of Warren County sits a reservoir known to many. Fishing, boating and hiking are just a few of the amazing opportunities that this area boasts. With over 2,000 acres of fields, this majestic location reminds us as to why our State is called, “The Garden State”.  The Merrill Creek Reservoir which is 650 acres is used to replenish the evaporative water to the Delaware.  This location allows us to exist and interact with nature.

Located at the Merrill Creek Reservoir main entrance, you can stop by the Visitor’s Center. Open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. and on the weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. you can speak with staff about the goings on in the area. You can also learn more about the wildlife native to New Jersey. Children will enjoy looking in the children’s room where they can color, read books, build and play puzzles. Our family often likes going and playing “bear family”. You can even touch a real bear skin. At the center, you can also research more about the Reservoir and its surroundings. Pamphlets, educational scenes and models of native animals and plants are all available to view and interact with.

After stopping by the Merrill Creek Reservoir visitor’s center, you can choose what to do next. With bird watching, hiking and a number of boating and fishing activities, there is something for everyone.

Down by the water at Merrill Creek

The boat ramp is open from sun up to sun down.  You can bring your kayaks, sunfish, canoes or small fishing vessels to explore the depths of the location. Many people enjoy days on the water just sitting and enjoying nature. For more information you can check out the boating information at the reservoir’s website.

Another exciting opportunity at Merrill Creek Reservoir is the number of bald eagles known to be in the area. These eagles, Merrill, Hailae and Harmony are not only visible but also have been tracked since 2011 using bands and GPS tracking. Keep your eyes to the sky to see one of these majestic birds or their hawk relatives.

Seeking Animal Habitats Merrill Creek

After a morning of fun, we recommend you stop by the butterfly garden with your packed lunch. A blanket and family favorites from home are a perfect addition to any time at Merrill Creek Reservoir.  They ask that you carry in and out due to bear activity but a lunch in the great outdoors finishes the day in a great way.  If you are looking for a wonderful day with family that is free, Merrill Creek Reservoir is a great place to be.
