Lucy the Elephant, The ONLY Elephant You can Walk Through

In 2011, Lucy the Elephant provided complimentary admission to bloggers and their families as part of our family blogging event, Bloggers at the Beach. This post has been updated with more recent pictures and information. Our opinions are our own and honest based on our experiences.

Lucy the Elephant, Lucy the Elephant, down by the sea…”

If you’ve spent anytime in South Jersey you’ve probably heard the jingle. For my toddler (who is now 11 years old), the song stuck with him and he’s been known to sing it around the house.

Why not?

He’s made some great memories with Lucy.

Lucy the Elephant is a six-story elephant in Margate that you can walk through. We’ve been a few times now and for my 3 boys the thrill of walking through Lucy never gets old.

It doesn’t get old for any of us who live in South Jersey. Over the years, I’ve gone. Friends have gone and our other South Jersey mom bloggers have gone. You just can’t live here and not visit Lucy at least a few times. We’ve included pictures from each of our visits in our review of Lucy the Elephant.

What happens during the Lucy the Elephant tours?

Your visit begins with a short climb up Lucy the Elephant’s left rear leg to an open exhibit area. There, your guide, will tell you a little about Lucy the Elephant before you watch a movie about Lucy’s history.

  • Where is she originally from?
  • How do you move a six-story elephant?
  • How did she get her start?
  • Are there others?

The film is short enough to keep the kids entertained and interesting enough to hold the parent’s attention too.

After that guests are free to explore the rest of the museum floor and Lucy the Elephant. Stairs will take you to Lucy’s howdah (rooftop/canopy) where you can get a great view of the Jersey shoreline and the top of Lucy.

Moms, dads, no worries the staircase may spiral a little but any child willing to take his time and hold the railing or a parent’s hand can easily and safely make their way up and down. Even at the howdah the enclosures are high enough to keep kids in. Yet, there are still openings for the kids to get a great view too. That’s not all there is to Lucy because tucked within Lucy’s legs and body you can find artifacts from earlier years. You might even find leftovers from her last snack.

Peanuts inside Lucy the Elephant

While there is a great gift shop for Lucy the Elephant gifts, we doubt your kids will notice it. Once out of Lucy’s legs they wont be able to resist trying to climb Lucy’s legs. After all her toes make great stepping stones. Cute fact about Lucy’s toes. Lucy gets pedicures throughout the year to mark special occasions and her birthday. So the nail color you see on your first visit might not be the same as your next.

(Perhaps with the kids distracted, one parent can take some great photos, and the other can sneak into the gift shop for some surprise gifts.) It’s not everyday you can walk through an elephant so you’ll want pictures and souvenirs to remember the day.

I wish I knew Cheryl. I tried Googling it myself and had no luck finding the jingle. - Jenn
