Don’t Let The End Of Summer Be The End Of Your Waterpark Fun!
This year’s NJEA Teacher Convention week left us with four school days off – but no change in the after school activities. We couldn’t manage a long trip but wanted to do something that could maximize our time. Our answer was just under 2 hours away at Kalahari Resort and Waterpark (their website) in Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania. Kalahari has two other US locations and the Pennsylvania spot just opened in July 2015. We were looking for a family getaway but Kalahari is more than that. They offer a full service destination with a conference center, restaurants, spa, and of course the waterpark.
Dad had to work a full day, we ate dinner at home and headed out! Even with mild rush hour traffic we were at the resort by 7:30 pm. The view of the resort from the highway got everyone excited and when we pulled up, the music playing at the entrance had the kids in the mood for fun. There’s plenty of self parking or a friendly bellhop/valet can help you as well. One step into the lobby and it was determined by my kids to be “EPIC“.
The kids knew that this was not your typical hotel! From the far back wall you can see the waterpark. The restaurants in the lobby are bright and of course there’s animal sculptures everywhere. Guests in bathing suits wander by as you get checked in, and you can’t wait to get changed and go! Our check in process was easy. We were each given bracelets that act as our waterpark admission and room key (they have to stay on your whole visit), and off we went to our 7th floor room.
Did you know that with your room reservation you get 4 waterpark passes? And even though check-in isn’t officially until 4, you can use the waterpark the day of your check-in AND until close the next day? It also is open at 9 am for hotel guests only, and 10 am for daily guests. It’s really a great value and gets you lots of waterpark time.
Our room was so spacious! After an easy entry with our bracelet, we entered the room to find two queen beds and a sofa sleeper. We didn’t see any drawers at first, but they are tucked away in a closet near the entrance. Amenities included:
- Microwave
- Mini-Refrigerator
- Coffee maker
- Hair dryer
- Telephone with voice mail
- Table and 2 chairs
- Ironing board and iron
- In-room safe
- 32″ flat screen television

Outside of your room there’s plenty to do! There’s free high-speed internet access throughout the resort. Resort guests have complimentary access to the fitness center. There’s plenty of places to eat! Whether you want a sit-down, a grab and go, or just some tasty snacks, you won’t need to leave the resort to satisfy your cravings. If in the almost impossible case that your kids need more to do, the Kalahari Adventurer’s Club offers a full schedule of daily activities!
My children couldn’t resist the bright lights and sounds of the arcade, so we bought a game card and let them loose. There’s the usual video games and claw games, but I was so impressed by how many LARGE games there were! I’ve never seen anything like it! Most games give tickets to be redeemed in the prize room. It was so much fun to be able to walk around and shop for our prizes. An added bonus was that many of the items are also Kalahari souvenirs! Prize points can be stored on your game card for easy redemption later. There’s so much to do at the hotel, you ALMOST could skip the waterpark. But of course, you wouldn’t!
