Last Christmas, we announced our 2017 Charitable Partners in Caring. Each New Jersey charity that was selected by votes from our readers had the option of picking a month during 2017 where we would support them through advertising, articles, social media mentions and more. I am so pleased to introduce you to Izzy’s Infantry Fighting Pediatric Cancer and Spinal Trauma. They are our Charitable Partner in Caring for September 2017.

About Izzy, of Izzy’s Infantry

It’s your first child’s first birthday – a time of joy, of celebration and imagining what her coming years will bring, right? Now try to imagine just a few weeks later being in a hospital waiting for the surgeon to finish a 10-hour surgery on your child’s spinal cord. It’s unthinkable, but it’s what Marco and Sonia Rita experienced in September 2014, when an MRI showed a tumor wrapped around little Izzy’s spinal cord. They had hours to make crucial decisions about doctors, surgeries, treatments, etc, all things that were completely new to them and their families.

The following months brought more crash courses learning about therapies to help Izzy recover from the damage left by the tumor and the surgery. She faced a course of 42 chemotherapy infusions to keep the non-cancerous tumor from growing, multiple rehabilitation therapies and isolation while the chemotherapy compromised her immune system. She had to learn to sit up, walk, move her weakened left side and even eat, as the chemotherapy affected her GI system.

Watch as 3-year-old Izzy crosses the finish line at the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Lemon Run in 2016:

Today, Izzy is a smart and engaging 4 year old who loves to chase her friends. She brings a smile to everyone she encounters with her singing, her smarts and her determination to run and play with her friends. Izzy was fortunate to have access to healthcare and rehabilitative treatments as she needed, as well as the support of family and friends. With their time spent in children’s hospitals, the Ritas saw more than their share of fear and despair. Sonia and Marco wanted to help those parents who felt lost like they did, and to that end, they created Izzy’s Infantry Fighting Pediatric Cancer and Spinal Trauma.

Izzy’s Infantry’s mission is to:

  • Fund research that will lead to better treatment options and a cure for childhood cancer;
  • Fund rehabilitation programs for children recovering from a spinal cord injury;
  • Help improve the quality of life for children in treatment and their families through outreach programs and support groups.

In line with their fundraising goals, Izzy’s Infantry presents two events in September, and you are invited to attend!

Izzy’s Infantry Fighting Pediatric Cancer and Spinal Trauma Fundraising Events for September

Rallying Around Hope

On September 9, 2017, Izzy’s Infantry Fighting Pediatric Cancer and Spinal Trauma will host its First Annual Infantry Reception “Rallying Around Hope.” The event will feature a presentation from Izzy’s Infantry President and Co-Founder Sonia Rita on the organization’s mission and vision for the future of Izzy’s Infantry. They will also be presenting the Infantry Ally award to someone who not only works alongside Izzy’s Infantry to help find a cure, but inspired Sonia and Marco to create Izzy’s Infantry. They will also present the Ground Forces Award to one deserving therapist and one nurse who are the boots on the ground helping children through their battle.  It will be an evening of hope and celebration as Izzy just received good news on her most recent scans that showed her spinal cord tumor remains stable.
