10 Things to Know About Imagination Station Playground in Roxbury NJ
As part of our challenge to write about 100 New Jersey playgrounds in 100 days we bring you the details about Imagination Station Playground, a playground in Roxbury New Jersey. This is such a popular playground that we’ve written about it in 2013 and again in 2014.
We returned on July 1, 2022, to revisit the playground. While the equipment has remained the same it did get a fresh new paint job a few years back. Our pictures and details are based on our July 2022 visit.
Where is Imagination Station Playground located?
Imagination Station is located at 72 Eyland Avenue in Roxbury/Succasunna, New Jersey in Morris County. The park is part of the Township Roxbury park system. It’s also known as “Rocket Ship Park” due to the large rocket ship structure.
What kind of playground equipment does the Imagination Station Playground have?
This Roxbury playground has an abundance of activities for kids including several slides, ropes/net courses, and a tire swing. It offers TWO large play areas: a tot lot for little kids and a rocket ship/pirate ship for older kids.
Tot Lot
The “Tot Lot” is perfect for supervised children ages 2-5 years old, but younger children will also delight in the multiple play areas. Climb through the tunnel, swing in the infant swing, and slide down the slide.
Main Playground
The area for older kids looks like a wooden ship adorned with paintings of various sea creatures. There is also a large multi-level wooden rocket ship that children can climb and play in.
Are there swings?
There are two structures with swings. In the tot lot, the swing structure has 3 baby swings and one slightly angled molded bucket swing.
In the main playground, there is a swing structure with 3 traditional swings, a tire swing, and a slightly angled molded bucket swing.
Are there slides?
There are slides in both playground areas. The toddler/preschooler playground has a side-by-side slide with 3 slides.
On the rocket ship playground, there are multiple slides. There’s a wide side-by-side slide with 3 slides. There’s a twisting tunnel slide and an open wavy slide.
What special features does the playground offer?
The tot lot features a bridge, ride on toys, a tunnel, and more. But the main attractions in the toddler area are the 4-person see saw, the train, and the playhouse.
SS Roxbury II
The SS Roxbury II is one of the main special features of this playground in Roxbury. It has sea creatures and waves painted on it, two levels of play, slides, a fireman’s pole, and other features.
Almost as if it were hidden, behind the ship and rocket ship are multiple climbing structures, a dragon mural, and monkey bars.
What kind of ground cover does the playground have?
The ground cover is wood mulch.
Is the playground at Imagination Station accessible?
There are no ramps onto the playground equipment. There are not traditional accessible swings but there are molded bucket swings with angled backs.
There is an area of ground-level musical instruments, that sit in the wooden mulch, that may be accessible.
Is there shade available at the Imagination Station Playground?
In both the tot lot and main playground there are benches with roofing to provide shade.
My favorite shady area to play has to be the space underneath the SS Roxbury II.
Where is parking for the Imagination Station Playground?
There is a large parking lot.
Are there restrooms at Imagination Station Playground?
There is a building, between the parking lot and playground, with indoor restrooms and a vending machine.
What else is there to do at Horseshoe Lake Recreation Complex?
In addition to the playground at Imagination Station Playground, there are additional amenities available for visitors at Horseshoe Lake Recreation Complex.
Are there walking trails?
There is a 1/2 mile walking path as well as a 1.7-mile paved path for walking, running, or biking that weaves through gorgeous scenery. Another mom shared, “these courses are perfect for exercising; however, they are also great for moms walking their infants to sleep in their strollers, taking the dogs for a stroll, or going on a romantic walk with your loved one.”
She went on to say, “Another wonderful use for the paved path is to teach your son or daughter how to ride a bike. I have seen dozens of families bring their child’s shiny new bike or old beat-up tricycle to first learn to ride or practice what they have been taught at home.”
Are there fields or courts for sports?
This Roxbury recreational complex has multiple sports fields.
- Lighted basketball courts
- 2 Volleyball courts
- 4 Softball/Baseball fields
- Several soccer fields

The perimeter of the playground is entirely fenced in. There is only one way into or out of the playground. This makes it much easier to keep track of your little ones.
This park also features a lake for swimming (membership required) and fishing in addition to the playground, paths, and numerous sporting fields.
The park is perfect for play dates and family outings! Horseshoe Lake Recreation Complex has beautiful open spaces to lay a blanket and have a picnic. It also has numerous picnic tables and benches inside the playground and outside the playground. Friends and families can enjoy a snack or lunch while taking a quick break from playing.
Horseshoe Lake Recreation Complex is a popular site for carnivals, fundraisers, birthday parties and everyday picnics.
