One look at the City Tavern Restaurant’s front entrance and you know you are in for something special.
During our Weekends in Philly series we had the pleasure of having lunch at the City Tavern Restaurant on South 2nd Street in Philadelphia. It is truly something special. Step into the doors and it’s like stepping back in time.
- Servers are dressed in colonial wear.
- We munched on breads that Edison, Franklin, and other important figures from history would have eaten.
- My boys drank apple cider from old-fashioned mugs.
After, learning a little about the history, my boys were eager to check out the City Tavern Kids Menu. It too has a historic feel to it.
City Tavern Restaurant’s Children’s Menu provides 6 options for kids
- Colonial Turkey Pot Pie
- Cornmeal Crusted Chicken Tenders
- Grilled Chicken Breast
- Grilled Ham & Cheese
- Meat & Cheese Pie
- Fish & Chips
My 7-year-old tried something new with the Fish & Chips and loved it. My other two went with their favorite pasta and ordered the Meat & Cheese Pie. I looked over the grown up City Tavern menu and ordered the Colonial Turkey Pot Pie. All of us enjoyed our food so much, we didn’t leave any morsels behind.
Now, you know we had to have dessert. :-) So I was thrilled you could order dessert even at lunch time. Check out my Creme Brulee …delicious!!
It was a great meal and the service was excellent. The City Tavern also has a beautiful outdoor garden. During the warmer months, like now, outdoor dining is available. It’s a great option for parents with fidgety, wiggly children. Your kids can walk around and enjoy the garden as they wait for their meals.
We visited the City Tavern in the spring when outdoor dining was not yet available, but we were still able to enjoy their outdoor space and get some cute pictures of our boys.
The City Tavern Restaurant is open daily. Lunch begins at 11:30 am. Dinner begins at 4 pm Monday – Saturday and 3 pm on Sundays. The City Tavern is located at 138 South 2nd Street at Walnut in Philadelphia. Street parking is available.
