Cherry Blossoms in New Jersey

Cherry Blossoms can be found blooming in New Jersey from the middle of March to the end of May, but the peak season to see them is the first week of April. You don’t want to wait to see Cherry Blossoms.

Cherry Blossoms only stay in bloom for a few weeks. They are also very sensitive to wind and bad weather. A windy day or a bad rainstorm can cause blooms to fall off the trees. Then, the trees will not rebloom until the next Cherry Blossom season.

Peach Blossoms in New Jersey

Peach Blossoms can be just as stunning as Cherry Blossoms and honestly, at a glance, they are hard to tell apart. Driving along Route 40 one afternoon, I saw a collection of what I believed to be Cherry Blossom trees. After that drive, my friends at Family Scholastic Adventures offered to go out to explore Route 40 to find the blossoming trees I had spotted at a distance.

The mystery was solved when they reached the A Garden Party Florist on Route 40 in Elmer. Outside their doors and along the roadside was a large field of stunning blooming trees.

Victoria Spalding, Brand Ambassador for Family Scholastic Adventures took a beautiful array of photos for us that you can see in this Facebook post. It was only when A Garden Party commented on our post that I became aware that there are Peach Blossom trees and that they are very similar in appearance to Cherry Blossom trees.

Make Something Cool at Maker’s Day Events

Maker’s Day is typically the last weekend in March. It’s a fun day but one that we don’t get a lot of time to celebrate.

New Jersey Makers Day is a day that inspires and activates libraries to showcase and highlight STEM and maker culture, enhancing life-long learning.

The goal was to grow community engagement and develop connections among New Jersey residents by collaborating with libraries, museums, small businesses, and others to promote and explore new opportunities for entrepreneurship, innovation, and hands-on learning experiences primarily with kids and teens in mind.

The first event was held in 2015, but each year NJ Maker’s Day grows with more organizations getting on board to host events throughout New Jersey. Check out one of the NJ Maker’s Day events we have on our Calendar of Events.

Hunt for Easter Eggs

What is the go-to activity every kid looks forward to for Easter? Easter egg hunts!!

Who can blame kids? Easter egg hunts are like hide and seek, only the items can be a little trickier to find. And there’s always a prize inside. Bonus for the grown-ups… the kids get to run around and burn off a lot of energy.

Across New Jersey Easter egg hunts start occurring for 2-3 weeks before Easter and run right through Easter. We have two ways families can look for Easter egg hunts in New Jersey. Either visit our guide to New Jersey Easter Egg Hunts, Activities, and Easter Bunny Appearances to find Easter egg hunts listed by region, county, and city or visit our Calendar of Events to find them listed by day.

Cruise Among the Dolphins

Sometimes when you are really lucky you can see dolphins off the coast of the Jersey Shore. But to increase your odds of seeing dolphins take one of the dolphin cruises offered in New Jersey, where you’re pretty much guaranteed to see them. Here are a few we’ve experienced.

  • Atlantic City Dolphin Cruises
  • Cape May Whale Watcher and dolphin cruises
  • The Cape May Lewis Ferry, yes the ferry. While not promoted as a dolphin-watching experience in New Jersey, we have seen dolphins every time we’ve sailed with the Cape May Lewis Ferry.
Another thing to do in Atlantic City with kids is the Atlantic City Dolphin Cruises

Set Sail with Pirates

Do your kids love pirates? If you haven’t had a pirate adventure with your kids, you need to set sail with Jersey Shore Pirates. Bring your young pirates aboard the Sea Gypsy for a swashbuckling Pirate Adventure on the Metedeconk River.

Spend Some One-On-One Time with an Animal

Is there an animal your child or teen really loves? Chances are you can find a place in New Jersey that offers one-on-one experiences with that animal. Cape May Zoo, Six Flags Great Adventure Safari, Adventure Aquarium, and other locations with animals all offer experiences where your child can get up close with animals.

Or look into volunteer experiences at animal rescue farms throughout New Jersey. Many of these farms are dependent on volunteers and will allow volunteers to help anywhere from a few hours one day to a regular schedule of hours for a few weeks to months. Even if your kid is too young to volunteer on their own perhaps it’s something they can do with you or another grownup in their life.

Walk to a Waterfall

A great spring activity in New Jersey is visiting waterfalls. It’s actually one of the best times of year to visit. The warmer weather will have defrosted frozen glaciers of ice and the cooler weather keeps too much of the water from evaporating. You can see the waterfall at its fullest and most powerful.

While some waterfalls are accessible from hiking trails others require just a short walk from the car. Find out which ones in our guide to New Jersey hiking trails with waterfalls.

Jersey City Murals

Jersey City, NJ is another city that can wow you with their murals. I love it when my Facebook feed shows me another post of a new mural being developed in Jersey City.

Initiated in 2013 and funded by a Clean Communities Grant, the Jersey City Mural Arts Program is a Mayor’s Office Initiative that links established and emerging local, national and international mural artists with property owners city-wide as part of an innovative beautification program that reduces graffiti, engages local residents and is transforming Jersey City into an outdoor art gallery.

Asbury Park Murals

One only needs to walk the Asbury Park boardwalk to see some of their best murals. While there seems to be no official source that lists all the mural in Asbury Park, most of them are part of the Wooden Walls Project. The Wooden Walls Mural Project is a collaborative initiative that brings art to the Asbury Park Boardwalk.

It’s said that the best Asbury Park murals can be seen under the beachfront Casino walkway and downtown on Bond Street.

You can see some examples of the Asbury Park murals at these two websites.

Sneak in Some Beach Days

Warm spring days can have us longing for the beach. So make it a beach day. New Jersey beaches aren’t guarded in the spring, so no swimming. But you can certainly do some sunbathing, pack a picnic, shell collecting or build an epic sand castle. For details on New Jersey beaches visit our 2024 guide to New Jersey Beaches and Beach Tags.

As we get towards the end of spring check opening days of the beaches in our guide. Many will require beach badges after Memorial Day and others may require them before hand.

Ride a Train

Another one of the great New Jersey spring activities is enjoying a train ride with the kids. Gone are the cold days of winter. Climb to the top of a Lighthouse

New Jersey lighthouses make for great NJ day trips in the spring. Climbing to the top can be a good workout for the adults and a different kind of way for the younger ones to burn off energy. When thinking about NJ spring activities for kids add lighthouse climbs to your bucket list.

Most lighthouses had to be closed during a portion of the last two years, but now they are open again and ready for visitors. Get some climbs in while the weather is still cool enough to avoid getting too warm.

Walk above water

Looking for a different kind of hike or walk? Why not walk above the water by walking across a popular bridge in New Jersey. The Ocean City bridge, the Garden State Parkway bridge in Cape May County, the Tacony Palmyra Bridge, and the Ben Franklin bridge are all South Jersey bridges that have pedestrian paths. We even wrote about our experience walking across the Ocean City bridge.

The Goethals Bridge has a 10-foot Shared-Use Path with access on both sides of the Arthur Kill. The Bayonne Bridge Walkway has a 12 foot path that can be accessed from the John F. Kennedy Blvd between 6th and 7th street in Bayonne. It’s said to be one of the highest bridges in New Jersey. You can even walk across the George Washington Bridge into New York.

Sign up for a CSA

Community Shared Agriculture, or CSA, is a farming model that allows families to show their support for local farmers by prepurchasing produce, herbs, and flowers. The idea is that you pay ahead of time for these shares and then reap a portion of the bounty all summer long.

sunflower
One of our CSA memberships last year included pick-your-own sunflowers.

It can be a great way for your family to save on food, but it’s also a fabulous way to get fresh-from-the-farm food onto your table. Many CSAs let members pick up food weekly from summer through to the fall. Some even have pick-your-own flowers and herbs for shareholders.

Even though CSA shareholders don’t start picking up their shares till summertime, spring is the time to sign up. Space is usually limited so don’t wait too long to join one. Edible Jersey has a listing of several CSA farms in New Jersey.

Skate

On warmer days your spring activities in New Jersey can include outdoor rollerblading. Rainy days…head indoors for rollerskating. We’ve got a guide to 100+ Places to Skate in New Jersey that includes NJ roller skating rinks, ice skating rinks, inline skating trails, and skateboard parks because you’re never too old to enjoy skating with the kids.

Introduce the kids to fishing through a New Jersey Free Fishing Day or get Hooked on Fishing event. Both provide kids and their grownups with a chance to try out fishing for free and without a fishing license. Sometimes these events even have fishing poles the kids can use. It’s a great way for kids to try out fishing before committing to buying poles and licenses.

Start Strawberry Picking in New Jersey

Before summer has a chance to set it and spring ends strawberries start popping up across New Jersey. In South Jersey the end of May and beginning of June is the best time to pick strawberries. Outdoor Dining

Outdoor dining may have been an idea created out of necessity a few years back, but I’m glad it’s here to stay. Many NJ restaurants have continued to offer this service. Grab a sweatshirt or a sweater and enjoy a meal out in the sun or as the sun sets with the kids.

Amusement Park Fun

Did you know that many New Jersey amusement parks open BEFORE the summer starts? It’s true, many will open on weekends and school holidays. If you love the roller coasters and thrill rides, but hate the long lines that come in the summer, get out to the amusement parks this spring.

You’re probably familiar with Kids Bowl Free. Did you know that some of the participating bowling alleys in New Jersey start letting kids bowl free during the spring? Some start as early as April or May. Find out if your kids can bowl for free as part of your family’s New Jersey spring activities in our guide to Where Can Kids Bowl Free in New Jersey?

Even if your bowling alley doesn’t start till later this spring or summer, now’s the time to sign up. You don’t want to miss out on getting in as much free bowling as you can.

Shop a Farmer’s Market

We mentioned CSA’s earlier. While your CSA shares won’t be available till summer you can start shopping NJ Farmers Markets in the spring. Not only is it another great way to get local farm fresh produce on your table, but many also host kids activities and live entertainment during market hours.
