Do you have a Thomas obsessed little one in your house? Then you do not want to miss the Delaware River Railroad Excursions’ A Day Out with Thomas. It is a dream come true for any little boy or girl that is a fan of Thomas the train. The day is full of opportunities to transport yourself to Sodor and feel like you are a part of Thomas’ world.

Our Day Out With Thomas

The day starts with a shuttle ride in either a school bus or trolley from the free parking lots to the train station. The drivers are very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. It was a great start to our day. At the street level are two bounce houses, a gift shop, a large poster of the trains (which make a great photo opportunity), a miniature train display, and the ticket stand. The bounce houses are included in the price of the tickets and will help the more enthusiastic fans burn off excess energy.

Down the path, next to where you board on Thomas is the Imagination Station, Sir Topham Hatt, a ventriloquist, story time/video time, and of course the star of the day: Thomas. While waiting for our turn to board the train children can take a photo with Sir Topham Hatt, watch the ventriloquist, or listen to stories about Thomas and his friends. The busiest spot of the day was Imagination Station.

Imagination Station includes areas for children

  • to make stamped postcards,
  • spin art,
  • color pages,
  • or get temporary tattoos.
  • In the center of this tent are three Thomas train tables which kept a lot of children occupied.
  • Next to the train tables are two Mega Blok Thomas tables that are the perfect height for toddlers and encourage children to create their own train stations or whatever else they imagine.

One of the most exciting parts of the day was watching Thomas pull into the station. As Thomas reached the train station he welcomed all his fans. My daughter couldn’t believe that Thomas was really talking to us. Boarding the Thomas train takes place around a half hour before the departure time which leaves time for each family to take a photo with Thomas. Seating is quick and efficient which makes it easier to manage restless riders. The scenic route lasts a half hour and overlooks the Delaware River.  Other key moments that my children really enjoyed was handing the conductor their tickets and receiving a Junior Engineer Certificate that states they are ready to join Thomas on his next adventure.

It is very important to pick up a Scavenger Hunt sheet at one of the stations so you can receive stamps. As you visit Imagination Station, The Story Time tent, Sir Topham Hatt, and the gift shop you receive a stamp on your map. When you get all of your stamps you can visit the gift shop where we were given special gift for visiting all the locations. This year the gift was a special Thomas party blower. My kids had a lot of fun with those in the car on the way home!

Why we loved our Day Out with Thomas:

We had a such a fun day with Thomas. All of the activities were geared toward younger children, which means my energetic 3 year old was thrilled. He was able to participate in all the activities and be his typical 3 year old self. The actual train ride was only about 25 minutes, so it was just long enough for young children to enjoy the ride and watching the scenery. But, before they lost interest and got bored, the ride is over and we were moving on to another activity.
