Best Winter Activities for Families in Sussex County

Some people dread the coming of winter, while others rejoice. No matter which way you lean there is still fun to be had this winter. Sussex County is full of great winter activities that are outdoors and plenty of activities to keep you warm and dry inside. So pack up the family and head to Sussex County to enjoy some of the family friendly winter activities.

 

Take the family on an ice fishing adventure.

Ice fishing is a favorite winter activity for many Sussex County residents. It offers a wonderful way for families to get together and enjoy the fresh air while engaging in a little sport. Sussex County has numerous lakes for families to spend the day ice fishing. They include Lake Hopatcong, Cranberry Lake, Jefferson Lake, Lake Aeroflex, Lake Musconetcong, Swartswood Lakes and Lake Wawayanda. **Before fishing, make sure you research the policies and regulations for each lake.

 

Spend the day at Hopatcong State Park.

Hopatcong State Park is a favorite family destination for families in Sussex and Morris Counties. All season, this amazing park if FREE to enter and enjoy. Families can have a blast hiking, walking the dogs and playing sports. After a big storm, kids really enjoy sledding and tubing down the big hills inside the park. I have even seen kids on skis! Tagalongs is a new indoor play place that recently opened up in Lake Hopatcong. It’s a great place to spend a cold winter afternoon. The kids can play for hours in the pretend police station, fire station, diner, ice cream cart and more. Tagalongs is located at 828 Rt 15 South 2nd Floor Lake Hopatcong, NJ. Spend a Day Ice Skating at Skylands Ice World

Skylands is a great way to have some fun this winter. They have public skating hours every day, so you are bound to find a time you can go. Spend the Day Outdoors at High Point State Park

High Point State Park is one of the most beautiful and scenic parks New Jersey has to offer. The winter is no exception. In the winter, High Point offers families the opportunity to enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing with gorgeous views. Half-day, full day and season passes are available for a reasonable rate. In addition, families can enjoy the Winter Festival on January 30, 2016 from 12pm-3pm at the Interpretive Center. This event is FREE but a donation of $5 per family is appreciated. Families can also enjoy nature programs and snowshoe walks.

 

Escape the cold and go bowling at Sparta Lanes

Winter means long, cold, snowy days stuck in the house. Eventually cabin fever sets in and you have to get out. But what is there to do in this cold weather that’s not going to cost your family a fortune? Bowling! Bowling is a fun way to spend an afternoon or evening together as a family without spending a ton of money. Sparta Lanes in Sussex county is a great bowling option.
